Her family and friends have come up with another solution: they are calling for Mr Blair, the Prime Minister, to intervene directly with President Bush.

If Mr. Bush is at all on the ball he will quote his father's comment on the communist coup attempt at the end of the USSR. "This shall not stand!" It's one thing if the locals defend this woman, as rightly they seem to be doing. But Mr. Bush should announce his support on nationwide TV to assure that the word gets out.

For if "the problem comes down to a delay in the couple's application for Green Card status - because the immigration service office in Newark, New Jersey, lost a sheaf of papers," what assures us that that office's computer will not put a priority on evicting her?

But if those INS people (and I use the term loosely in this case) see it on TV they will know it is important.
