I expected a war on terrorism, not confiscating crochet hooks from grannies.

Dang! Does this mean I can't knit on the plane?

Haven't we been under Martial Law since 1933?

"We don't need federal marshals on board planes. We need armed pilots. We don't need three hour waits to board a plane"

This is really the only part I disagree with. Its already been proven that anyone can come here and learn to be a pilot...ANYONE. Im not against allowing foriegn students coming here to learn at our universities but I think we should use extreme descretion as to what countries we accept them from and what they are allowed to learn. Flying is not a right, it is a convenience and I am all for tighter security IN THE AIRPORTS. These are international gateways where many of the people coming and going are not US citizens and therefor require a higher state of security but outside of the airport....leave me the hell alone.

I brought this up in a Republican Women's meeting this morning, that we need to be wary of the legislation giving increased power to the Feds. Some of the women got mad at me, said we should support the President. My response was support of the Bill of Rights was more important, or the blood of all the people who died for this country would be wasted.

Yes, but not just anyone can get a gun, a concealed-carry permit, etc. without an FBI background check and a five-day waiting period. For commercial pilots, they would have to pass a security clearance and military training as well, if the President wants them to be armed. Most are ex-military, or have worked in law enforcement.

The panic over armed pilots is truly unwarranted. Pilots are rightfully concerned over their own safety and that of the plane, and taking their Swiss Army knives and fingernail clippers away are not going to be of any help. The way things stand now, our pilots are even less able to defend themselves than before 9-11, all in the name of 'security' and 'safety.'

Commercial pilots have the inside skinny on our total lack of security, and if you knew what they knew, you'd want to be armed too.

I saw something where a PILOT said it would be stupid for them to be armed....because it would take so much to get out of their seatbelt, turn around, unholster the gun, get up and out of the cockpit....he said he'd rather have the doors to the cockpit LOCKED.... FYI

You are exactly right. Bush will only be president for a while. The damage done to freedom can be permanent.

Our nation needs a fifty-state housecleaning and a thorough overhaul of Washington, D.C. with all of its ugly government sprawl.

Ugly and corrupt. Ugly and corrupt.

Excactly! So, should they airlines only hire pilots with the ability carry weapons? If you answer is no, then there needs to be someone onboard the aircraft with the ability to be armed and secure safety.

I said the same this morning. Show me the plan and what we can do. We should be sewing up our borders to all but those who understand and desire the principles of the USA. We should be spending massive dollars on civil defense from biological, chemical, and nuclear assaults. We should limit our trade to countries which share our values. In short we should stick to our principles in all of our global interactions.

Ahem.....the gun is to protect the pilot in case anyone tries to come thru the cockpit door.
Not so he can go back and shoot the terrorist.
The pilot who said the above is either incredably dense or just a hoplophobe.

"We don't need federal marshals on board planes. We need armed pilots. "

You have failed to look at the big picture. The pilots will be in a "secured cockpit" so they won't be in the position to shoot someone. Bush asked for $500,000,000 to make this happen.

We were a lot freer than we are today.

To me, these threads about lost freedom are generally not being made by people who lived in the US, before and during WWII. Here are some keywords, which were the sacrifices Americans made, in order to protect themselves, and to win. Internment, Rationing (Gasoline, rubber, foodstuffs, nylon, etc.), blackouts-West Coast, etc. Rationing had the effect of limiting travel.

Women worked in defense industry plants (Rosie the Riveter). There was a lot of propoganda, toward the war effort. The enemies were (justifiably) called "Japs" and "Gerries."

I'm quite sure that if you had an Asian appearance, a policeman might "profile" you, and ask for ID, and what your business was. I'm equally sure he'd gladly accept with a kind smile, when your reply in perfect English was "I'm Ted Chang, and I own Chang's grocery store, on Maple Street."

If for whatever reason, we are not willing to make necessary sacrifices, we will put victory in peril. We have been told this will go on for a long time. We have been told it isn't a convential enemy and war. These facts aren't a government conspiracy. They can be verified, independently by non-government sources.
