On Sept. 12, our company had a representative of United Way talk to us about donating and said something very similar. He talked about the tragedy in New York and Washington as if he considered them to be competition. It was sickening. Then, a week later, we had more shills for the United Way come in and suggest that we should give to them the money those of us who donate to them usually give first and then send money to help in New York and Washington. I have never donated to the United Way and now I know that it will be a cold day in Hell before I ever do.

Airliners are laying off 14,000 workers apiece. That's news.

A small flaming liberals' club laying off 14 workers. That's hardly news.

Methinks that this has nothing to do with their finances. This is simply a publicity stunt. They're being overshadowed by these attacks, rightly so, and they don't like it. So, they must create a "sense of urgency" and stir up their base, who are currently busy with other things.

They just want to scare their "base" into believing that they're on the verge of bankruptcy (which they probably are anyway) and frighten them into donating.
