First time I've really read her. Now I see where Jonah gets some of his writing talent.

But real men, the kind of men we need as national symbols have the grace to take it outside or inside or down the hall. They wouldn't totally lose it on TV unless, and this is the big unless - they are performers.Thank God someone finally said that.

I am all for jumping all over Peter Jennings at this time. His behavior during the entire crisis was more appropriate of a reporter for Iraqi television.
Normally, I am all for the piling on of Dan Rather as well...but not this time. Dan showed me something during this crisis. He was, above all, a professional. His reporting was accurate (he was the only one to not run the video of the fires in Kabul and act as if we somehow did it). He was fantastic at seperate fact from rumor...and clearly stating what was confirmed and unconfirmed reports. I watched him for at least 9 of the 14 hours he reported that day, and not once did I hear him say anything I would consider partisan or biased. Captain Dan will revert to his old form again....but in case I'm wrong, allow him this time for the respect that he deserves for performing his job better than anyone else did for those first 3 days.

Gotta admit; she's outdone herself on this one. Excellent.

My dear brother and sister FReepers,
At this, of all times in my lifetime, I would like nothing more than to be able to read these threads and reply to them. I have much I would like to say.
BUT, I cannot!
Why?
Because I am trying hard to raise the finances needed to keep FreeRepublic up and running so that we can continue to share valuable information and respond to it.
I beg you, if you have not yet donated to FreeRepublic this quarter, do so now!
If you have already donated, THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND GOD BLESS YOU, please ping your friends, and FReep on...!
I realize you are giving to lots of Relief efforts and I encourage you to do so. But we need to help FR too. Where would we be right now without it?
If you have no money, please come and bump the Fundraiser Thread.
I would really like to reach our goal quickly so that I and the rest of the dedicated FReepers who are working the Fundraiser Threads can participate in what is undeniably the most important time in FreeRepublic's history.
WHERE WOULD YOU GET YOUR NEWS FROM IF FREEREPUBLIC WASN'T HERE?<--click here

I have never seen anything so phony in my life as Dan Rather's display on the Letterman show. I actually thought it was a rehearsed comedy skit and at the time felt it was in such poor taste. There was not a tear in his eyes, yet he was swiping away at his cheecks and holding on to Letterman's arm for dear life. I almost vomited.

I wasn't around for JFK's assasination(I was born in 1970), but I have seen the old black and white images of Walter Cronkite putting on his horn-rimmed glasses to read the latest bulletin. Maybe those of you who remember that time can tell me if what was being reported was "All Schmaltz all the time" as it has been for the last few days.
I have been very emotional at times during this period while watching actual news. What we see time and time again by the media whores is a replay of events, not intended to inform but intended to bring out emotion. I've had enough!
Flipping through the channels, I have come across BBC World News. They seem to get it. It's actual news...an entire broadcast which informs its viewers! Perhaps if the tragedy happened in Great Britain their news would be filled with the same mallarchy that our is filled with.
My wife and I discuss this every night, are we wrong to not want to be spoon-fed the emotional ipecac that the media keeps forcing?
I want news from news organizations...leave the emotion to Oprah!!!

Thank you, YaYa, and Lucianne...most excellent and bumpworthy article! President Bush, a manly man, waited until he was out of the room at his press briefing the other day to break down and sob. You could see the effort he made to steel himself, not giving in to his tears when he knew the nation needed him strong. Dang, crying again.

I haven't seen Dan Rather because I don't watch any of the big three nutworks. The only reason I saw this performance was because Fox News showed it. I agree with you. I almost threw up my orange slice.

I don't watch Letterman, but saw the clip of Dan on FNC.
Call me a cynic, but if Dan was that torn up, he would never have gone on the Letterman show in the first place. Gag me with an old pontiac.

The problem is there is very little choice in the mix...If you miss one, you can watch another for the same drivel...
