I'm thinking about what you wrote; you've asked hard questions, painful to contemplate.
I may respond to you in private, because whatever I write will likely be ungainly and Frankenstein-like.
FWIW, I know you're not really cynical. It is much more cynical to turn away from the quesions you ask because they are too painful.

I rarely agree with you about anything, but I do agree with you that it is naive and wrongheaded to believe ala Bush that capitalism is the universal solvent that erodes away cultural differences, and generates a taste for personal and political freedom and tolerance, and lubricates whatever frictions are out there so as to facilitate pax capitala the world over. As we have seen, one can wear jeans and take the Koran literally at the same time. One can even booze it up and take the Koran literally, or parts of it, cafeteria style.

WELLLLLLLLL....excuse me.....BUT, that practice is done ALL over the middle east....and, IN INDODESIA.... Christians are forceably converted to islam and women and girls are mutilated in this INHUMANE MANNER!!!
IN fact, some Bosnian Muslim women( VERY secular muslims) and their families were offered santuary in Moslem countries(PAKISTAN was the worse example) during the civil war in Yugoslavia.
GUESS WHAT????
Some of the young girls were tortured in that fashion. The UNHCR ( that the a refugee agency of the UN) was forced to take them out of Pakistan when the parents complained of inhumane "MEDICAL" treatment of their daughters.
I worked as re-settlement volunteer here in the USA and I read the case histories of at least 30 young girls who had been deformed by this brutal act of EXTREMISM!! These girls now reside in the USA.
The muslims have all sorts of STRANGE and cruel ideas when it comes to girls.

Not another American dime for these bogus nations like Egypt. Cut off all funding of any kind. No business interaction. Cancel all green cards and visas. Ship them out. Close the embassies. And let them eat sand.
That felt good to get it out of my system. The true task is for us to remember and remember and never forget. We need to find a way that we do not need anything that these vile nations have to sell. Put solar roofs on everything, build wind farms ... I used to laugh at such things, but now I am ready to do anything that means not one nickel of ours gets to Egypt or Saudi Arabia or any of the rest of them.

I can't help buy lay some of the responsibility of this attitude by the middle east on our media and our politicans and the false image they give of America. We know they spew out lies, race bait, play the race card, are divisive instead of uniting, all as a political game to gain minoritiy votes.
These liberal politicians are guilty of the same power seeking retoric as Ben Ladin. We have a first amendment, but that does not cover all speech, for instance yelling fire in a crowded theater. Liberals like to throw out the spurilous charge of hate speech, and then engage in it themselves. It should become politically incorrect to be found baiting, or hating America first, because some people are taking them a little too seriously.

...Those sentiments, shared by about half of several dozen people interviewed in Cairo, also provide a clue to the motives of the hijackers themselves. They, too, appear to have come from relatively well-to-do families and had little in common with the desperate and usually uneducated Palestinians who make up most of the suicide bombers in Israel. It just goes to prove that "university students" world-wide, in large part, are collectively an idiotic, self-consumed, mushy-headed, group easily led by the forces of the far left, who have no grasp on real life but rather postulate moronic theories which they pass off as reality. What they need is a job at that McDonalds - and a spanking.

Pretty sorry picture.

"
Egypt is irrelevant. They have no major oil assets.
So nukes on Cairo, Alexandria, a few other locales and the Aswan Dams
and a 5,000 year-old civilization goes away permanently.
No loss considering how little Egypt has contributed to humanity in 5,000 years."
This is the most stupid posting I ever have read on Free Republic.
However you have had a lot of competition recently.

RE #95 I agree. The shallowness of market utopia, pushed by Milton Friedman and Thomas Friedman as well as Goerge Gilder is apalling. It is painfully true that the pursuit of uptopia, the latter day Eden, is done by both the right and the left. I am not saying that I agree with Muslim fundamentalists. I want all those who are involved in NY attacks to be crushed by American military. I am just noticing that our so-called "elites" are shockingly shallow and short-sighted.
Many times, politicians are busy catering to their political donors' immediate whishes and whims. These people have time-horizon of at most 2 years. Sometimes less than 1 year. And their only concern is to get money as fast as possible, nothing else. A country of 20 million can be easily destroyed for many years because one of these speculators want to get 100% return for his investment in one year. This problem can happen in any country, not Egypt. These will create another blowbacks if the "elite" are not careful. Finally, even if everybody in the world goest to McDonald, drink Cokes, and watch stupid Hollywood B-movies, they still culturally remain a lot different from U.S.. All these American goodies are nothing more than thin outer facade of his mind. They do not change his perspectives, or one's history.
