Well look at the bright side... They were going to attack, better now the either earlier or later. Bush has nearly his entire term to hunt down these barbarians.

Charles Adams in
When in the Course of Human Events has this to say about the plan to arrest Taney:
The account of the plan to arrest the Chief Justice and the execution of the order for his arrest is confirmed by two trustworthy independent sources of information -- [federal marshal Ward Hill] Lamon himself, in his personal papers in the Huntington Library's rare book and manuscript collection, and Professor Francis Lieber, author of the famous Lieber Code, which Lincoln endorsed...Both Lamon and Lieber were, throughout their lives, ardent Unionists. Lieber's private papers are also at the Huntington Library. Lieber noted that Lincoln gave Marshal Lamon the arrest warrant for Taney along with permission to make the arrest. This confirms Lamon's account in detail.
-- pages 48-49
Adams also lists as a source Harold M. Hyman,
A More Perfect Union: The Impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on the Constitution (New York, 1973), 86 n.15 and 84 n.8, in his endnotes.
Hope this is of some help.

Why are all the libs on TV talking about loss of liberties? Do they have something up their sleeves? Could it be what they are saying is "If we fight this war - we'll lose freedom - so therefore we can't do it - can't fight this war - don't you see - we have a high IQ and were right all along - it just doesn't look that way right now - but you'll see - trust me - it's American imperialism" ???
These are the same people who trashed the 10th amendment, reinterpreted the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th and probably would be happy just ignoring the constitution entirely.

This Conservative former police officer, who rarely agress with the ACLU, believes that this is a dangerous path we are starting down.
Before you start insulting people why not engage your brain?

On Lincoln's orders, outspoken civilians from secessionist states were jailed at Fort McHenry without formal charges, as were Baltimore's mayor, police chief and police commissioner, 31 members of the Maryland legislature and newspaper reporters, members of Congress and judges. Seems like a good time to get rid of Peterless Jennings, Broken Jaw, and Blather as well as quite a few Democrats!

When the FBI was violating the rights of Martin Luther King and other communists, Gimme a break! Nobody put MLK in jail even though he broke more laws than anyone can number.

I think it's about time that you grow up and face some facts. The govt is not an omnipotent "daddy" that can prevent all harm. The police state you appear to be calling for will not make us safe. I hate to be the one to disturb your touching, childlike faith in Big Brother but there it is.
Myself, I will wait to see what legislation comes out of Congress before I criticize it. But this is not the time to lose our heads and turn this great country into a mirror image of our enemies (even if that would help, which it won't).

"There hasn't been any hint of such a thing happening."Are you on drugs?

"It is not so difficult to imagine government investigators, engaged in good-faith efforts to protect our safety, beginning to ask, 'Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of a pro-Palestinian organization?'" They should...and they should start with Senator Clinton.

He said a couple days ago he won't let the terrorists win by having us become a "police state."

Thanks, I've been trying to pin that down for a while now.

There is a difference between making such comments in times of peace as opposed to making such comments in times of conflict. Obviously, "context" is not in your vocabulary.

**Wow - you really ought to be embarrassed and ashamed for yourself.**
Not at all. I knew my comments would bring out some of the bedwetters and I haven't been disappointed.

**I think it's about time that you grow up and face some facts. The govt is not an omnipotent "daddy" that can prevent all harm.**
Did I say it was? Rather I see a lot of Chicken Littles afraid that the evil U.S. government boogeyman is going to be lying underneath their bed hoping to strike while they are asleep. You fear the wrong enemy.
**The police state you appear to be calling for will not make us safe. I hate to be the one to disturb your touching, childlike faith in Big Brother but there it is.**
No, it won't make us safe but it COULD make us SAFER - at least in the short term. I'm not talking about disarming the citizenry or putting people in camps. I'm talking about checkpoints, blackouts, rationing - the sort of things a government MUST do for security in time of war. I'm not the one sounding childish.
**Myself, I will wait to see what legislation comes out of Congress before I criticize it.**
Me too, and I'd want a plausible explanantion why any steps are necessary.
**But this is not the time to lose our heads and turn this great country into a mirror image of our enemies (even if that would help, which it won't).**
Study your history and see what Americans sacrificed in the Revoluntionary War, the Civil War and WWII. If you can't muster the same level of commitment as these, then don't come crying to me about it. Americans have surrendered freedoms before to win a war. We may be asked to do so again. If you can't abide with these sacrifices, Canada welcomes you.
