those who say we could have avoided it by staying out of the affairs of other [countries] are right. No, they are wrong. We could have avoided it by having NO foreign policy at all. Under any meaningful foreign policy we would recognize that Israel and West Europe are better allies than, say, Iraq and China; and then if Israel is at war with someone other than West Europe we woudl have a degree of involvement (or is it entanglement) on Israel's side. And that would have caused the wrath of Mr. Laden just the same.
What would have helped if no illusion of valueless and clueless foreing policy were created by x42.

Argentine is a much better country following their loss in the Falklands war!

Thanks for the flag, AJA. Nice thoughtful piece.
There is a serious question about thinking the the Taliban alone are the sponsers of bin Laden. The tentacles of this evil run deep. As Bush has given us the impression that he doesn't want a "show" war involving a two million dollar missle against a 10 dollar tent, I imagine that the bile will have left the throats of many liberals by the time the plan is laid out. We need a War Declaration now while the bodies of our dead are still in the street.

It isn't about "retaliation." It is about the institution of "Peace" for our grandchildren.

Good work, AJ. That was a well reasoned piece. We do need a real declaration of war by Congress. From all indications, the President isn't listening to the posters here who want to rush into retaliation. Let's hope that he also isn't listening to his own advisors who want this to be a UN operation.
If this is the road to Armaggedon, then that has been foretold and what comes of it shouldn't be feared by any Christian. Our Lord, Jesus Christ is with all of us who accept him. I hope that our countrymen and members of our government accept him and ask for his counsel.
What happens next isn't exactly up to us anyway, is it?

To lose liberty is to lose, and there would be nothing more disrespectful to the dead. This is a sentiment that should remain on the lips of all Americans throughout this ordeal.
Unfortunately, there seems to be many who would relinquish liberty long before they realize uncontrolled fear or greed has allowed them to make such Faustian forfeiture.

I am saying that (1) the United States will always have a foreign policy that distinguishes between good and bad, or if you will, between Civilization West and Civilization East; and that (2) even if we make our foreign policy perfect, the Radical Islam will be displeased with us.
We don't emerge from the same set of conditions that the Swiss do. The Swiss can say: If the world goes to hell in a handbasket tomorrow, there is nothing we can do about it. We can't say that because, missiles, aircraft carriers and all, we can do something about the world's upcoming demise. We've got the superpower's burden.

Brilliant, as always.
The hijackers and plotters want us to retaliate. Otherwise, they would not have attacked us. They hope we retaliate in a way that will unite the Muslim world against us, and so we must avoid that at all costs. We must and will retaliate...
Exactly. Our over-reaction is what they hope for more than anything.
...but we must do it in a way that retaliates only against the people directly supporting and harboring Osama bin Laden.
We need to broaden our view a little -- it is quite possible that Osama bin Ladin was little more than a minor player in this. Anyone who aided, abetted or supported these acts is a legitimate and necessary target, irrespective of whether connected to bin Laden.
