The jihads are local events. There is no worldwide jihad against anyone. Penalizing people in Indonesia because some kook in Kabul bombs us is rather shortsighted.

The jihads are local events. Only if Osama Bin Laden is from Brooklyn.
There is no worldwide jihad against anyone.
Is mayhem just an Afghani export, kinda like woven rugs or opium?

It's like when McVeigh bombed the OKC building. It was not a reflection on all militias or anti-government groups or the like.

I heard someone on the History Channel make a good point. Look at the targets bombers in Israel choose. They aren't attacking government buildings or even synagogues, they bomb discos and pizza joints and open markets. In other words, its western culture that they are at war against.
Look around the world, in every open society 'Americanism' has crept in. In fact you can judge how open a society is by how 'Americanized' it has become. I think these fanatics know that the American meme is stronger than the Islamic meme, that our culture will subsume theirs if given the opportunity to compete on equal footing. This is at odds with the idea, entrenched in the Koran, that Islam will spread to cover the world, a kind of Islamic Manifest Destiny(somewhat comparable to Christian Post-millenialism). In effect they are 'immanentizing the eschaton' or hastening the end of the world(as they see it).

and show bin Laden what a real inquisition can do. Then cut off his head and sew it into the belly of a pig. Why not skip the cut off the head part, and simply sew him into the belly of a pig alive?

I too believe that their war is more cultural than religious, at least to the degree you can separate the two. It is obvious that the self-denial and harshness of Islam -- toward its own adherents as well as its enemies -- cannot compete with the apparent materialism of Western culture. In fact, Christianity is not particularly materialistic, but at least it tolerates -- if not encourages -- a decent profit.
Islam seems to appeal to the self-flagellators, people who hate themselves and by extension, everyone else. As if suffering isn't present aplenty, they have to invent miseries to suffer for. And those who aren't suffering aren't in their God's good graces.
They've just dealt us a share of their suffering. It's time we return them the favor. If they can't live and let live, then that may become a luxury we can't afford either.

And I would bet there are more mosques in America than churches in Saudi Arabia.I would have to say that this is one of the most astute and perceptive comments I have heard in the past week, and maybe even the past year. I hope you won't mind if I borrow it.

And by the way, the only world they're going to see end is their own. This primitive pettiness cannot be tolerated in a world with the destructive technology available. Civilization is not Bin Laden's toy to remake in the image he deems fit. I can't imagine that any right-thinking Moslem welcomes a religious war that pits Judeo-Christianity against the followers of Islam.

Do you even have to proof-read?...;^)

Jack, my understanding of the Bedouin culture and its history in the Arabian and Kurdish regions is spotty, but I do know that it might benefit Freepers to look at the history of Bedouin culture as it existed prior to Muhammed's advent, that, as substantiation of your mention for the roots of the turmoil in that region being much older than Islamism. [I am reminded of the passage in Daniel where the one coming to Daniel following long exhortations from Danierl stated that a 'spirit' in Persia restrained him for a while.]
BTW, this is one of your finest pieces of writing, Jack. ... I know it probably rolled out of your word processor with little or no revision, but it is superlative all the same.

Do you even have to proof-read? I find it "flows" better if I don't. I sometimes go back and polish, but the guts of the piece usually go down in one whack. Thank you for the compliments.

Too much flattery! Ego overload!!!
Sincerely, thank you. As is the case with so many others, this horror has me in a constant turmoil. I vent on paper, and the results, for better or worse, end up here. In this case, it appears to have struck a chord. I've had plenty that didn't.

This is a good thought-provoking article but I disagree that there are more than one gods. I don't believe in different gods for different people and I don't think they are praying to anything but a false god.

I don't necessarily believe in different gods either. But apparently there are some who do. I know the God I believe in doesnt't sanction this kind of mayhem committed in His name.
