If bin-Laden were being held by the Taliban, and if the Taliban were to invite the FBI to slap the bracelets on him and drag him back to the US (big "ifs")then we would have to house the bastard in a federal prision and provide him with assistance in his defense as we brought him before the bar of justice.

And if we were to capture 50 of his highest level supporters, this scenario would be repeated 50 times.

If we declare war, then these bastards get to be slammed into POW camps. Perhaps these could be conveniently located outside of Barrow, Alaska, for their convenience.

Once in the POW camps, these individuals would be entitled to three squares a day and periodic mail delivery. And, as prisoners of war, they would be incarcerated for the duration of the war.

And the war wouldn't be over until WE say it's over.

Might take years! Decades, even.

Signed, bumped and emailed.

Thanks for this crucial link, Jeff.

A Congressional Act of War by The United States of America will open all military options and release all defeatist constraints in pursuing and punishing every last cell of International Killer Terrorists and their political co-conspirator supporters--the specific Mass Murderers of the WTC and all other terrorist factions world-wide.

TERRORISM UNDER ATTACK!

One problem with this. Nations do not declare wars on individuals or bandit groups. Wars are declared against sovereign states. A declaration of war against banditti grants them a dignity they do not deserve. Furthermore, it means that we must treat all captured terrorists as prisoners of war, giving them privileges not granted to criminals.

It is appropriate to use military force against bandits and pirates, even bandits and pirates pretending to be governments. We did that against pirates in the Carribean in the 18th and 19th Century. The British treated the destruction of Blackbeard as a naval operation (as opposed to a police action). We treated Pancho Villa as a bandit, not a nation, when we mobilized our army against him in 1914.

If we want to declare war on nations succoring terrorists responsible for this action (Afganistan, Pakistan, and Iraq come to mind), fine -- in fact great! Otherwise, simply authorize the President to mobilize the American armed forces against banditti. Declare war on nations that try to stop us, but don't grand bin Laden the dignity of treating him as a sovereign power.

useless, reactionary, dangerous and dumb

No, sir. Attacking the United States is useless, reactionary, dangerous (VERY DANGEROUS) and dumb. Declaring war and prosecuting war on those who have declared war on us is absolutely necessary for us as a society.

Cordially,

These guys are into a war frenzy.

Easy to do from the safety of one's recliner. Lets see how many would sign up for a draft of 40 year olds....

What we have to do can be done just as well without a declaration of war that might lead to the suspension or elimination of our personal liberties.

Have the military gotten any new equipment that runs on hot air instead of petroleum? There's lots of the former and will be little of the latter very shortly.

Well, it took 49 posts, but finally someone got to speak up who has his wits about him.

Spread the word, my old FRiend.

Hey, wait a minute! [grin] [I think "seasoned" is a better description, myself...]

I'll sign the petition and spread the word, but I have no doubt much more is going on behind the scenes than we - or more importantly, the world - yet know about. I've been listening very carefully, not only to Bush but to people like Rumsfeld, and while some of the extreme hot heads around FR will never be satisfied, I've no doubt that something "large" is about to happen.

You don't really think all the UN employees are streaming out of Afghanistan because they all took the same week for vacation, do you?

Since this a laundry list of everyone we don't like in the world, let's add the Dutch too. Bunch of rude blockheads. Good chocolates, though.
