Geez, did either of you read my second sentence? I stand by my claim that most terrorists do not want to perish. Since they know escape is impossible, they are deterred from hijacking planes. This group was NOT afraid of death, so they were unaffected. See my first post for my theory on deterring them. Incidentally, it's pretty much what you suggested.
We want the very cheapest airline fare, but don't think about what is being cut to allow that cheap fare to exist. All I want is freedom. I'm willing to accept responsibility for my own safety and defense, but I insist that I be able to defend myself. I will not get on another airliner without defensive tools. I'll settle for a knife, but I really want a small gun with ammunition appropriate for the environment.
The people on those flights died because they were cooperative sheep. I'm not saying that I wouldn't have been just as passive on Tuesday. Tuesday, there was no history to indicate that passive acceptance wasn't the best way to deal with hijackers.
Today, I'm certain that any hijacker that tries to take control of a plane with me on it will have to kill me before he or any of his accomplices will take control of the plane. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one he'll need to kill or subdue, either.
