I had the good fortune to be an occasional e-mail correspondent of Barbara. As BKO, she replied to one of my "Report from Chappaqua" threads about Hillary, and we began an occasional friendship for nearly two years. When "Hell to Pay" was published, I was trying to arrange an author's noight for her at the Chappaqua Public Library. Both she, and her agent, thought it would be hilarious. Ww could never pull it off.....too much flack from the library board. BKO enjoyed FR...she did a lot of "research" on the boards here. She will be missed

In my little private school long ago we had a kid who had been suspended from the nearby public school come into the room during English class brandishing a knife and threatening a student a few rows over from me. One kid yelled 'get him' and sprang up. We didn't hesitate to help him- girls, boys- all of us but the lone English teacher leaped out of our seats and over our desks and literally crushed the kid. Somehow no one got cut. All I remember is the startled look on his face when the whole class headed his way.

"Get Him!"And that's what you have to do. And that's what you have to do to the nutcase in the shopping mall with the AK-47 or the hijacker with a grenade too. You should know what the consequences of submission to evil are by now.
Those who would strip us of our means to self defense are simply telling you:
good people who refuse to submit to evil must be limited to bare hands against it.
Which is why the gun grabbers are morally corrupt, whether they know it or not.

Well, John, I DO cry easily, and late yesterday afternoon the staggering news of this wonderful heroine's death set off another round of tears. Prior to that, I'd actually done well having "lost it" only twice during the day...once while on my knees at Church, and the other upon hearing that my brother in law had had a scheduled meeting in Manhattan that was scheduled late enough so as to have him turn back toward Philly. Praise God!

I did not know Barbara, but I felt as if I did. I took her death personally. As I write this my eyes still fill up with tears. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ted and Barbara's family. Yes in deed Barbara is a Hero. It has been reported that Barbara was able to give the seat number of one of the murders. Barbara loved our Great Nation and all we represent. FREEDOM! To the very end, Barbara was a soldier for us. She fought to the end. We will miss seeing her on TV and fighting for what is right and just. We have lost a great American. We will miss you Barbara!!!!

oops, and people who are trying to make sense of things in a thread should stay on topic.
Mrs. Olsen was a lamp in the darkness. A good woman has fallen. Never Forget.

You will always lose in battle, because as Patton said you take council of your fears. There is always a big chance that every counter attack will fail. People who win such conflicts are those that can understand what is going on well enought to figure out what the terrorists want to do and use that to turn the tables or at least improve the result. One must assess the danger and then act accordingly. You react according to the book. People who do that almost always get beat by anyone that does not go by the book too.
How could anyone with a brain fail to instantly understand why they replaced the pilots yesterday. Olsen asked what to advise the pilots who were in the back of the plane with all the passengers. That means every crew and passenger was aware the terrorists were flying the plane. The only possible answer to the question of why the terrorist's pilots are flying the plane is becuase they are going to do something that the airline pilots would not do. The attackers were certain the airline pilots would not do it with a knives and grenades as persuaders.
Almost anyone who keeps his wits would figurer that out in a heartbeat. Yet you are afraid you will provoke him into using the Grenade he only maybe has. At that point you obviously have not figured out what is coming down. What was going to happen would have been clear to me. I would have acted accordingly.
But let me generalize the highjacking situalion. Either the the terrorist wants to survive the highjacking or he does not. If he intends to survive then the grenade is just as dangerous for him as it is for you. Passengers can use it as a weapon against the terrorist, just as the terrorist can use it against them. It is a two edged sword. If he intends to die as those did yesterday the sooner you take him on the better your chances. For if the terrorist intends to die, he intends for you to die also. But if the grenade is a bluff, even if he intends to die, you may succeed and most on board might live. If you can make the terrorists defend control of the airplane, their goal is in doubt. Anything that stands in the way of an adversary achieving his goal, is a wise course of action. He in his fear may make a mistake. They rarely make mistakes as long as things go as the terrorist planned.
This were not some mentaly ill dude wanting to go to Cuba. That is a different situation. But failure to assess the real theat, is stupid and produces yesterdays results.
In yesterdays situation the only question may have been who dies with the people on the plane. The prudent rational approach is what all victims always take. Terrorists bet on it. Your post is proof of why that is a good bet.

I met Mr. and Mrs. Olson at the White House Correspondents dinner this past summer. She was so nice. She and her husband allowed me to take a picture of them.
I can't imagine the grief and despair that Mr. Olson and his family are going through right now. I'm sure President Bush and the whole conservative community are upset about this.
When I heard about her being on that plane, I said out loud, "Oh God no." I can't believe that she's gone.
My prayers go out to her family and to the other families who lost loved ones yesterday, and to those who are still missing.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Eternal rest give to them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them.

If anything "good" can come of Barbara Olson's tragic death, it will be her story will be publicized and more people will hear of her book and read it.

Bump for a beautiful lady.
How appropriate the title of her best-selling book: "Hell to pay."

Thank you Ann for this very moving tribute to Barbara Olson. I found a little piece from Mark Twain that fits perfect for your story.
In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

Don't for a moment think did they do not know. There has to be an ulterior motive because common sense dictates that you do not disarm law abiding citizens to be at the mercy of criminals. After this obscene attack, the people must see that these wackos are dangerous. I do not give them the benefit of any doubt. They are morons of the first order or maybe worse.

The passengers on the Pittsburgh plane did attack. They saved many lives. They should be honored.

Don't know if anyone else has posted this, but the October issue of Elle Magazine (which I bought off a local newsstand yesterday) has a long article about Barbara Olson and her husband Ted. One of the quotes highlighted talks about how Barbara gets (got) death threats, and that Ted tried to keep them from her. Post for those interested in learning more about this great American.

I've waited some time to respond to these threads about Barbara, trying to find words to express my sympathy, sense of loss and grief. Words still fail me. Many are more fortunate than I to have personally known her, as I would have liked to.
May God grasp her to His bosom and comfort her, since I cannot with her passing. Rest in Peace, Lady Fair.

A Lady Fair, of Lineage High
Psyche:
- A Lady fair, of lineage high,
- Was loved by an Ape, in the days gone by.
- The Maid was radiant as the sun,
- The Ape was a most unsightly one,
- The Ape was a most unsightly one--
- So it would not do--
- His scheme fell through,
- For the Maid, when his love took formal shape,
- Express'd such terror
- At his monstrous error,
- That he stammer'd an apology and made his 'scape,
- The picture of a disconcerted Ape.
- With a view to rise in the social scale,
- He shaved his bristles and he docked his tail,
- He grew mustachios, and he took his tub,
- And he paid a guinea to a toilet club,
- He paid a guinea to a toilet club--
- But it would not do,
- The scheme fell through--
- For the Maid was Beauty's fairest Queen,
- With golden tresses,
- Like a real princess's,
- While the Ape, despite his razor keen,
- Was the apiest Ape that ever was seen!
- He bought white ties, and he bought dress suits,
- He crammed his feet into bright tight boots--
- And to start in life on a brand-new plan,
- He christen'd himself Darwinian Man!
- He christen'd himself Darwinian Man!
- But it would not do,
- The scheme fell through--
- For the Maiden fair, whom the monkey crav'd,
- Was a radiant Being,
- With brain far-seeing--
- While Darwinian Man, though well-behav'd,
- At best is only a monkey shav'd!
3 Men:
- For the Maiden fair, whom the monkey crav'd,
All:
- Was a radiant being,
- With a brain far-seeing--
- While Darwinian Man, though well-behav'd,
- At best is only a monkey shav'd!
