Um, my recollection is that the AIDS epidemic began in about 1980 in this country, and by the "early 80s" was pretty well-known, including the term "AIDS".

See my post prior to this one. We had a big to-do here in Houston in the late-80s/early-90s with one "clinic" ("Spring Shadows" as I recall--I haven't recovered those memories yet :-) responsible for "recovering" memories in about 90% of their patients. They served to destroy quite a few families before the curtain was pulled back to reveal the little man at the machine.
I seem to recall several psychotherapists losing their licenses as a result, and being sued over the next few years. Their M.O. was claiming to have found evidence of "ritual satanic abuse" in the vast majority of their patients. Checking yourself in there was a near-guarantee they'd find you'd been "ritually abused" as a child.
Very evil people.

The thing you have to be careful regarding is that "recovered memory syndrome" was an 80s era boondoggle.
I know that. My post #3 was based on one of the cases.
Janet Reno was one of the nation's leading prosecutors, winning cases based on such ludicrous "testimony".

If researchers had the support and resources to begin their investigations much earlier, they might have found HIV as early as 1982, when there were only 900 reported AIDS cases in the U.S. Instead, politics delayed the discovery of HIV until late 1984, when there were over 4,000 cases of AIDS, with 1,800 dead. Please note my comment above was a paraphrase of what others had said. I claimed no intimate knowledge of the AIDS timeline, but for what it's worth, I quote the above from a review of "And The Band Played On." It's really a minor point to the subject of the post, in any event.
