I thought he was saying “work will be optional and money will be irrelevant” because the world will be completely dystopian due to our AI and robot overlords.

Musk should announce he is giving up his trillion dollar salary. A robot can do his job.
Anyone would guess that Musk would say something like that as he loved Iain M Banks “Culture” series where in such a society exists. His landing barge names are names of Ships in the series. The ships are run by Minds which are as far from AI as we are from ants.
I like this - robots can plant my garden and mow the grass.
Banks was a brilliant author.
The “Culture” still had plenty of issues....

But there was no money and work was optional - the biggest problem was which drug am I going to gland now? And there was always the occasional excession ...
