Nope, not without raising our prices and time.
Not so much culling the herds as just selling out. There are lots and lots of mom and pop cow calf operations, the foundation of feedlots, that are just ending their business. It has become too hard and too expensive to raise cattle.

Trump’s recent behavior on many matters is a whole lot more than either disconcerting or disappointing. Starting with the rollout of the ballroom that was not going to change the White House and the fact now that was a lie.
It is not the rancher that is benefiting a lot from these prices.
Why should the government be transferring wealth from beef consumers to beef producers?
And apparently, the tariffs are working so great that we need to import Argentinian beef!
This is why I staunchly oppose EVER* letting government go down the rabbit hole.
It never stops. You interfere in X? OK, now you’re going to “temporarily” interfere in Y. Oh and that caused a problem in Z? Well, we have to do one-time bailout of Z.
The markets will deal with it better organically, on their own, than they will with government “solving” anything.
*Yes, yes. If a hot war happens? Do you *really* disbelieve anything needing to be seized won’t be seized?

That makes sense. Meanwhile, 77 cattle Ranchers go bust every day in the US.
I know during Covid Lockdowns my “people” at MTXBeef.com who primarily sold to restaurants scrambled to stay afloat, started selling to individuals, opened a website online.
Recently they opened their own processing plant, and one of the restaurants they supply received 3 (IIRC) Michelin stars.
Their beef is not vaxxed, unlike Argentinian Beef. They are generational Ranchers, and an awesome family.
Free trade is fine within the country, libertarians wants to pretend borders aren’t a thing.
Interstate tariffs are unconstitutional.
Obviously the new high prices will spur less demand, but the trend had definitely been up.
It really drives me crazy when people say things like this because you’re letting nationalism get in the way of individual liberty. I think is anathema to my conservatism.
I think the United States is built on the idea of individual liberties with a pact based on common defense and sure, common good.
I *am* patriot. It was before my time, but things like WW2 happen when the great beast that is the United States needs to muster us all to a common purpose.
But outside of the emergencies? The government should stand aside. Communities can fill gaps that *can* be filled.
I hate to be a downer - but nobody is promised Xanadu on earth. I reject any thought of “government” being the guide on the path that mythical place.
It should limit itself to being a trail marker.
Of course, I’m talking about international trade. Which this beef thing is about.
I want a limited government too. But not one that forget its primary reason for existence is to defense the country.
Obviously the drought has affected the production of grains used to feed cattle. Not much can be done about that. But it can’t be stressed enough that Biden’s reduction of oil pumping has played a huge roll as well. Agricultural fertilizers are a huge byproduct of the petro-chemical industry. Increased oil production under Trump will eventually alleviate fertilizer and fuel costs for farmers somewhat but oil will stay artificiallyhigher in the west as we increase sanctionson Russia over Ukraine. In turn grain costs will fall. But the problem of multinational corporations using domestically produced foodstuffs must be addressed. The American taxpayer has paid handsomely to keep farm products manageable but the corporations then ship it around the world to make more profit. America First should include lower prices for the American consumer on goods and services produced in America.
But I’m sorry to say —
The *primary* leftist argument is that the need for collective defense never ends and involves all elements of life.
Hence, December 7 doesn’t matter. We’re ALWAYS at war. And yeah, someday in the future, we won’t be but don’t worry about that. We - the government - will tell you when we’re not at war.
I’m sorry, but that’s just a root level leftist trope.
This is different, it’s just temporary, it’s a special case.
I think our nation is quite well defended. I know we spend more on it than the next 5 nations combined, a couple of which are our close allies. I also trust the servicemen and women in our branches.
The government is defending me fine by making even the idea of a foreign army invading and occupying my home a laughable idea. I pay a lot of taxes for that - and I’m fine with it.
Now, in exchange, could the government kindly get out of my way?

The 2nd largest supplier of US agricultural fertilizer components is Russia. Canada is number one.
Those Russian imports are tariff free/ duty free.
