I don’t agree with your take.
Just adjusting tactics. Same as they did in the infantry assaults. Now they are multiple 3-7 men squads assaulting positions over larger areas with drones, missiles and artillery called in to destroy contacted positions.
They are gaining lessons on what will work in the future with drones and other devices that may include robotic/unmanned vehicles.
The next near peer conflict is going to be very bloody and civilians are going to be the number one casualty as they always have been in wars....
And just more men dying with little to show for it.
yes
Let’s put this in perspective.

I’m not so sure your perspective is putting things totally in perspective.
Russia is not engaged in a war to obliterate Ukraine’s military. It need only occupy the territory it has gained while slowly (yet inexorably) reducing the countries will to resist terms acceptable to the Russian government.
Advancing at a “snail’s pace” is irrelevant when your goal is to slowly inflict casualties (rather than conquer the geography of the entire nation).
Will Russia’s strategy ultimately work? I don’t know, but I’m willing to bet the Russians are not wringing their hands over the fact that every Ukrainian pop-center isn’t bombed into a smoldering cinder.
And thus Russia's turn to terror bombing. This has been a tactic that is often resorted to when there is failure of success on the battlefield. It was used in both World Wars. And yet history shows that it does not work. Rather, it tends to strengthen the will to resist. Look how long Germany in WWII resisted when there was no hope for victory. The sieges of Stalingrad, Leningrad, and Berlin should show the futility of trying to bomb an opponent to submission.
And "terms acceptable to the Russian government" are part of Russia's problem. They are too demanding. The terms demanded by Russia are not asking for concessions on the part of Ukraine, but its complete subjugation. Russia is forcing Ukraine to fight for its survival as a nation. You would fight for yours, why do you think that the Ukrainians would not fight for theirs?
“It is not diverting enough to make up for Russian forces advancing at a snail’s pace on the battlefield.”
I recently put up a map showing areas occupied by Russia and asked if it was 2022 or 2025.
No one responded. Real data can be enlightening.

That photo (video still actually) wasn’t taken by any news agency, dummy.
Most Shaheds are shot down with old Soviet era heavy machine guns. So the drones, whatever they cost Russia to build from imported Chinese and Iranian parts get downed by a few hundred dollars in ammunition - and I am counting the rounds that miss.
And the net effect is still the same. Russian soldiers dying in Ukrainian fields, or along dirt roads next to the fields, or in their trenches and bunkers.
gee, really?.... Russian soldiers are dying... during a war? You have incredible insight, tell me more. Just because a "tactic" is changed, innovated, discarded or attempted, does not mean the end of the killing and dying.
It's war, that is what war is. It's not some video game where you get to re-spawn and start over. Men, fathers, sons, brothers, husbands are chewed up and burnt to a crisp or left disfigured and damaged in all aspects of life.
The US is looking at the coming conflicts and deployment of any of our assets is going to be swarmed by drones of all shapes and sizes..... it's going to be like WW1 with the use of machine guns and artillery... or WW2 with the advancement of mobile heavy weapons supported by infantry and air cover in combined movements....
Russia and Ukraine are bleeding each other in this conflict.... Russia just has more blood that Ukraine.. simple as that. It's not right or wrong it just "is".
We have no idea of the casualties but to imply that the Ukrainians are somehow coming out "ahead" in casualties is just simple minded and silly.
Go around your neighborhood and ask how many of your friends would like their sons to fight for Ukrainian freedom? ... or Baltic Freedom... or even our freedom.
“Most Shaheds are shot down with old Soviet era heavy machine guns.”
Ukraine has done well under the blitz of 500-600 drones day, with some big missiles thrown in that do damage.
Russia is expected to increase that to 1,000 a day and later to 2,000 a day.
