My observations are anecdotal, not studied, but in my opinion, liberals are not just unhappy. They are negative people. They are angry.

To put it into the simplest emotional vocabulary, they aren’t just sad, they are mad.

If you pin liberals down, when they want change, it’s not constructive change. It’s typically vindictive and destructive. It’s the reason why they want to punish the successful and reward cheaters and criminals.

Might as well ask what explains the happiness gap between those who follow the spirit of antichrist (mainly the Left) and those who follow the Spirit of the Lord (mainly the Right).

Those in the darkness of death are usually not too happy whereas those in the Light of Life are serenely happy.

Liberalism tells people their ills and failings and frustrations and disappointments are not their fault. Tells them these things are the fault of huge forces outside themselves. America, or Conservatives, or global warming, or capitalism, or racism, or homophobia, or anything from a vast list of grievances, mostly made up out of thin air.

A certain kind of person, or anyone at a certain point in their lives (often young) will go for this explanation like its a recreational drug.

Rush Limbaugh used to say the Democrat party is just a loose coalition of grievance groups.

When everything is deeply believed to be relative, they know they can never know true truth, and everyone else can always assert these liberals are wrong—including all other liberals, because the other liberals will conjure up why they are obviously superior to a given liberal.

It is a pecking order that is senseless and vain. Even though they all assert they are smarter than conservatives, they can’t ever prove that in any way anyone else can agree to.

When conservatives assert they are better at something, it is objective and given context, to allow everyone else to validate it and agree, willingly and voluntarily.

I've seen it but never really analyzed it. Yes. Liberals are the people who want change and its always destructive, vindictive, and targeted at specific groups of people. The change they want? They want you dead so you can never embarrass them for pointing out their pettiness,

then they will find someone else to persecute. THEY are always persecuting someone.
