And its best player refuses to speak English.
I remember baseball.
“But did he change lineups to increase his chance of winning? Did he make risky play calls to increase his chance of winning?”
I freaking hope so. He better do everything he can to win. It’s his job.
Rose was a degenerate gambler, lost millions betting. If you think for one minute he never bet against his team when he was the player/manager, thats just absurd. Joe Jackson and the other Chicago Black Sox never got reinstated, and neither should Rose. Besides, he didnt give a rats ass about the HOF, why should anybody else.

What about wearing out a pitcher just to win the games he bet on, at the risk of an injury?
Go Party Animals!
its been so many years now, less and less even know who he was. Passed away last year and it was a one day story.
There’s a new team this year, the Texas Tailgaters.
The Dodgers are Hollywood.
They are playing tomorrow at the stadium the Miami Marlins play, and the game is sold old. The Marlins can only dream of selling out a game.
I liked the Angels back when Disney was cool and even before that when Gene Autry was the owner.
It made him look a little slow-witted.
no salary cap is destroying baseball. Just a handfull of teams will be good. The Dodgers this year basically got it wrapped up and they haven’t played one game yet. This has been going on for 25 years, a generation, and once great baseball towns are dying because of that. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Detroit etc...baseball simply doesnt matter to those cities anymore. The television ratings have cratered and ESPN just dropped thier coverage of the MLB. Dying a slow death..the only sport truly thriving is the NFL, its more popular than its ever been.

Ah, but winning a game is different than winning a bet. When it comes to winning a game, one more run is all you need.
But to win a single game bet, you often have to cover the spread. It depends on how the bet is set up, but maybe to win your even bet against a weak team, your team has to win by three runs.
So in such situations, was Rose more focused on winning by one, or by three? A manager’s strategy would certainly be different for each.
An honest manager would be happy with a one-run victory. A betting manager might take more risks to get a three-plus victory.
I know we've had our disagreements, but doggone it, when you're right, you're right.

But hasn’t that always been the case, especially back when you could always count on at least one of the New York teams being in The World Series?
The other thing ruining Baseball, is the lack of marketable stars.
How many ballplayers can the average casual fan name?
In my day, ballplayers were household names. Now every team looks the same.
Seems like everyone on this thread hates Pete Rose. I played baseball and loved the game. Pete played it harder and better than anyone. As a player,he deserves to be in,as a manager he doesn’t. R.I.P,
Charlie Hustle

I don’t hate Rose. His gambling problem was, at heart, not evil but a weakness.
But I’m sorely disappointed by his behavior as a manager. It would have been better if, after he retired as a player, Rose would have just bought and quietly ran a McDonald’s franchise somewhere.
Then he would have been a great example for young players for generations to come. No questions asked.
