I have seen online picture archives of the old days of Trump where dozens of them show a black person with their arm around his shoulder or smiling as they stand with him. Most were sports or other celebrities but many were politicians or people he helped with some charity. Everybody seemed to love him-—until the moment he said was running for President against the Dems. Then it was all over.

There is a 2021 documentary of long lost footage of the 1969 black music festival the same summer as Woodstock. Summer of Soul. They had songs by Sly and the Family Stone, BB King, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension. Never released film masters had been stored away in boxes and had to be repaired and remastered.

They allowed a scene where Rev. Jackson was trying to raise money for a charity and Al Sharpton actually tutored him about approaching businessmen saying tell them if they don’t fork over the money they will see chanting, angry protesters outside their office and see themselves called white racists on all the TV news shows.

We used to paraphrase that and accuse Sharpton and Jackson of that but this scene actually shows Sharpton saying it.

Bystanders said a lot of black people resented and questioned Sly and others allowing white performers in a band. “What are those whites doing up there? They don’t belong in our music.”
