Most currently-available heat pumps can work fairly efficiently as a supplemental heat source in a well-insulated home at keeping inside temps between 65-75 degrees (not 85-90 degrees) until the outside temperature gets down to about 35 degrees or so. After that, there’s not enough heat left in the outside air to transfer in. They cannot be the “main source of heat” in cold climates where temps regularly drop below 35 degrees. They can work good in the fall and spring months, but not freezing cold winter climates. Another reliable source of heating needs to become the mainstay after that.
FWIW, I have not had any personal experience with the new, so-called “cold climate” heat pumps, but I just cannot see where they’d be able to be any more efficient where there’s no heat left in the outside air.

They are dangling the “incentives” in front of landlords to entice them into renting to the dregs. Which I, for one, refuse to do. I have a vacancy that I have been advertising since March 15th. Out of about 150 responses only 3 were qualified meaning credit score above 600, no smoking, clean rental record. I also refuse to advertise with any company that reveals the exact street address due to having had my ad hijacked by scammers in the past. And then there is the squatter issue.

All the rest were baby mama drama, subsidized lunatics, etc. Sadly all three qualified backed out for various reasons. One came from Henrietta NY where he was used to a 3 minute commute to everywhere; he didn’t realize this area is rural so a 20 minute commute to his new job one town over is GOOD and turned it down for that!

We have a small HVAC biz and personally have two “cold climate” heat pumps that we use 99% for air conditioning in the summer.

Our house is not well insulated b/c our main source of heat are two wood burning stoves (soon to be outlawed here most likely). I rarely if ever run the heat pump as my electric bills are high enough as it is.

We keep in contact with hubby’s old co-workers when he worked for the Big HVAC companies here. They went along with replacing people’s oil fired boilers/furnaces etc. with the cold climate heat pumps and after the first winter despite all the insulation, the customers demanded to tear it all out and put back the oil fired boilers/furnaces.

This bribe will come back to bite them.

They get these improvements.

Watch their assessments get jacked.

And their property taxes shoot up accordingly.

Thanks to STAR they’ll still get a break on their school tax bill.

But NYS cost shares Medicaid with counties. Watch their county taxes soar, too. With no break on those.

And if you’re poor, what the heck will you do with your 200A service?

They’re not charging their EVs.

Turning the central air on arctic.

WTG, Deep State.

You fix it so NYS has almost, if not the, highest electric costs in the country, then bribe people to install things that will jack their property tax assessments and they likely can’t afford to use or run.

Note to those thinking of accepting the bribes...

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts. And Deep State.

Correct, I use a heat pump in upstate NY for September, October, April and May. They don’t work under 40 degrees.

The so called “cold climate” heat pumps are not designed for houses with ducts, they are the mini splits.

^Outright utter insanity^
I’m a retired HVAC tech/company owner.
There’s no way we’d EVER recommend replacing a boiler/furnace to our customers with ANY kind of heat pump as the sole-source primary heat system whatsoever. We’ve installed a bunch of em, mostly for summer cooling, with the homeowner’s understanding that they’re only somewhat efficient on the heat side in spring/fall climates.
Like you, we personally have two heat pumps that we use primarily for cooling in the summer, but we actually do use em in the spring/fall season for heat just to take the chill off on those cooler days. After that: propane boiler/furnace for under-floor joist radiant heat....LOL...now THAT system works great no matter how far Mother Nature wants to take the temperature down to. And for emergencies such as prolonged power outages etc; a good, old-fashion wood stove which would be used regardless of what the wok libs think.

NO ONE can convince me that n electric stove is cheaper to run than a propane one.

heat pumps are a total scam in cold climates ... they basically turn into electric resistance heaters below a certain threshold ...
