Just reading reports...I’d say the invasion isn’t made up of that many Ukrainians. Whatever Russian Army folks were along this front....weren’t that trained or prepared. Seems like they are mostly in retreat or waiting for some kind of force to arrive from the SE front.
Looking at this region to Moscow....540 km. Couldn’t the Ukrainians get a dozen APCs and just make a break for Moscow...to see if Putin has reserves to protect Moscow?
The situation in the Ukraine = The Ukraine is losing the war and needlessly losing soldiers.
Zelensky apparently thought that by attacking in Kursk, he could draw attention away from the nuclear power plant, retake the plant, and be in a better situation for negotiations in the fall.
Instead, he opened a new front in the war at a time when he doesn't have enough manpower left to protect the other fronts. His manpower on other areas of the front is 'critically thin' according to one of his leaders. He's wasting one of his best brigades in this maneuver - they are dying for no reason. He also likely elmininated any chance of negotiations at all, because the Russians are doubting that he's sincere in his approach to negotiations, and some are saying his objectives have not changed and or he's just in it to save his own skin.
Some in Russia (columnists or other talking heads) are pointing out Zelensky still has a decree against negotiations, Putin has said Zelensky is not a legitimate leader of Ukraine because his term ended and Zelensky canceled elections, and that Putin should wait to negotiate with someone else.
NATO knows the Ukraine can't win, but is fueling the war, sending Ukrainian men to fight and die in the false hopes that they can recover Ukrainian territory.
I am pretty sure that the Ukrainians are aware of how Moscow is defended. A small raiding party would probably be a suicide mission, and be belittled as a failure, regardless of results.
It appears that this portion of the frontier was defended by expendable reserves, on the assumption that the Ukrainians would not try anything there.
The Ukrainians have already knocked out two Russian space surveillance radars, that had no useful role in the current war, were vital to Russia for keeping an eye out for ballistic missiles coming from the south (SLBM), and for space situational awareness, without relying on the internet.
Ukraine has already lost the war. This will make no difference. For Ukraine to continue is only going to result in more young men being needlessly sacrificed.
It is criminal.

As a counter attack, this has been very successful and disruptive. Unless Ukraine has more strategic aims it would be wise (IMO) for them to pull pack to move defensible positions.
Time will tell.
