Taking Responsibility for Words

Bible in a Year :

The tongue has the power of life and death.

Proverbs 18:21

It’s almost unheard of for institutions to admit guilt after a tragedy. But one year after a seventeen-year-old student’s death by suicide, a prestigious school admitted it “fell tragically short” in protecting him. The student had been relentlessly bullied, and school leaders, despite knowing about the mistreatment, did little to protect him. The school has now committed to taking significant steps to combat bullying and better care for students’ mental health.

The devastation caused by bullying is a stark example of the power of words. In the book of Proverbs, we’re taught to never take the impact of words lightly, for “the tongue has the power of life and death” (Proverbs 18:21). What we say can either lift up or crush another. At its worst, cruel words can be a factor contributing to literal death.

How do we bring life with what we say? Scripture teaches that our words flow from either wisdom or foolishness (15:2). We find wisdom by drawing close to God, the source of wisdom’s life-giving power (3:13, 17-19).

We all have a responsibility—in words and actions—to take seriously the impact of words, and to care for and protect those wounded by what others have said. Words can kill, but compassionate words can also heal, becoming a “tree of life” (15:4) to those around us.

Reflect & Pray

When have you seen careless words cause damage? How can you show God’s compassion through what you say?

Loving God, please help me never take the impact of words lightly but rely on You to speak what brings life.

That sounds pretty impossible. Or very messy!

Yes, I’ve read that there’s been a huge uptick in pancreatic cancer. Many other cancers as well.

Been looking up cancer rates - I wanted some corroboration from the big medical organizations, not just the usual anti-vax sites. I figured at some point, the increases cannot be ignored.

This is from cancer.org, the website of the American Cancer Society.

(Nobody can complain their data is biased.)

2024 Cancer Facts & Figures Cancer | 2024—First Year the US Expects More than 2M New Cases of Cancer | American Cancer Society

https://www.cancer.org/research/acs-research-news/facts-and-figures-2024.html

***Twice in the excerpts below, unexplained cause or unknown cause is mentioned***

excerpts:

The American Cancer Society reports lower overall cancer death rates, yet incidence is increasing for many common cancers, including 6 of the top 10.

...

What might be most striking about the rising incidence is that it’s affecting increasingly younger people.

Cancer patients are getting younger.
Cancer risk increases with age, and people most likely to be diagnosed with cancer are adults age 65 and older. But this trend is beginning to change.

People age 65 and older (sometimes referred to as older adults) represent a growing proportion of the overall population, but their numbers are shrinking in the proportion of new cancer cases. In 1995, people age 65 and older accounted for 61% of cancer diagnoses and during 2019 to 2020 their contribution dropped to 58%.

In contrast, people ages 50 to 64 (sometimes referred to as middle-aged adults) are growing in numbers for both the population at large and the population of people with cancer. This shift toward middle-aged patients reflects both steep decreases in the incidence of prostate cancer and smoking-related cancers in older men and increasing incidence in men and women born since the 1950s. Although some of this increase is probably because of the obesity epidemic, there are thought to be other unknown causes as well.

The proportion of people under age 50 (sometimes referred to as younger adults) diagnosed with cancer dropped from 15% to 12% because of their shrinking representation in the general population (from 74% to 64%). Interestingly, though, they were the only one of the three age groups with an increase in overall cancer incidence from 1995 to 2020.

Especially notable is the rise in colorectal cancer diagnoses among people younger than 50. In the late 1990s, colorectal cancer was the fourth leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in this age group, and now, it is the first cause of cancer death in men younger than 50 and the second cause in women that age. The cause of the rise of colorectal cancer cases in younger adults remains unexplained but likely reflects changes in lifestyle exposures that begin with generations born around 1950, the authors say.

Cervical cancer is increasing in incidence in an even younger population—women ages 30 to 44. (In contrast, the incidence of cervical cancer in women who were among the first groups to have received the HPV vaccine—who are now ages 20 to 24—declined 11% a year between 2012 and 2019.)

Well, it is indoors. No outside perimeter around the venue (left open and unsecured by the SS), so no higher level vantage points for getting off a round or two. This means everyone in the building passes through security, and I would imagine that would be majorly jacked up today.

I noted when President Trump entered the convention that he had a rather stellar looking team. It went from the Keystone Cops DEI Team and straight to the Misogynist Toxic Tall Alpha Team. I suspect that’s who he’ll have going forward.

That pretty much confirms what Edward Dowd has been saying, as well as Steve Kirsch. Younger and younger.....and it hits fast and hard. Almost like zero to stage 4 very quickly.
