Lost in this discussion is the fact that Dachau had been in operation 5 years, the model for all future concentration camps. The Germans were just getting started on the Final Solution.

*Hitler’s word meant nothing. After all, he promised peace if he’d just be given a slice of Czechoslovakia and we all know what happened afterwards.*

It’s the same with the democrats. Trust but verify worked with the Soviets. We never applied that concept to the left. Like Munich the rest is history.

How many Freepers would agree with neutrality in 1941?

Still not convinced, but it's an important conversation to have.

1) Not our concern who is dominant on the continent of Europe.
2) Whose interests were we serving, and was the realignment of powers after V-E day good for us or bad for us?
3) How much of our decision making was influenced by wishing to preserve Wilson's creation of small, weak ethnostates, and was that good or bad for us?
4) Did participating in a European civil war slow victory in out existential war with the Empire of Japan?

Those are the discussion points that will eventually need to be answered, but, as you are about to find out, 79 years after V-E day is probably still too soon.

Precisely. Millions died because of idiocy the of WW1. This Reform candidate just killed any chance reform had. I’m wondering if he was a plant.

UK neutrality ?

or

USA neutrality ?

\/

i would have both the UK and the us stay out of it as long as possible, and watch the 2 bastard ideologies of communism and socialism chew each other up in attrition ,

if/when/ we or allies get attacked jump in with both feet and mop up.

Hitler would have taken that as a sign of weakness and eventually invaded England, probably after taking a year off to regroup and build the better bombers that were planned and fortifying France and gaining French troops.

As it was, the Blitz was rushed and thus unsuccessful.

He was out for revenge for WWI and viewed England and France as the primary enemies of the German people (after the Jews). He would have never stopped.

The fact is, Hitler declared war on us, a few days after we declared war on Japan. The American left was strictly for American neutrality up until the moment of Germany’s invasion of the USSR.

Right idea, wrong war. Britain would be better off today had it been neutral in WW1.

Counterfactual history is always so fun.

What if Europe had managed to climb down from the escalating reactions that started with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand?

Would the world not have been infected with Soviet marxism? What would China look like? Would the Austro-Hungarian Empire still be around? Would India still be part of the British Empire?

Or was Europe simply on a path to war at some point anyway?

(If Operation Barbarossa never took place)

In an alternate universe, the Soviets decide to attack Nazi Germany in 1942. Hitler's Generals were able to plan a successful assassination in 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Iron Curtain will be somewhere between the Baltics and Poland.

BH Liddell hart was a first-rate military historian. Apparently he was also a popular radio and TV “expert-historian” many years ago.

As I recall, he even personally met and communicated with the German generals Rommel and Guderian before WWII. In the 1930s, he studied their newly-published concepts about tank and mobile warfare - and greatly admired them.

WW1 was the biggest comedy of errors in history. It’s also why we should all be opposed to intervening in Ukraine. Those of us who have studied WW1 have seen this movie before.

There is a story that on the very eve of WW1, Kaiser Wilhelm II was hit by a dose of common sense. And so he tried to put the brakes on the rush to war.

But his generals told him that the troop trains had already started moving, and it would be too difficult to untangle everything.

Ah, what might have been had the Kaiser said, “Stop everything. And to hell with your train schedules.”

If the Germans had gone for the oil fields and ignored Stalingrad for a season, they’d have beat the Soviets, which is what his generals said to do.

This was actually close to Truman’s position when he was in the Senate. You had Nazis and Communists killing each other in large numbers. Why interfere with that?
