Ukraine was in a state of civil war before “invasion”. Half of them wanted to join Russia to start with.

I doubt it was half who wanted to join Russia, but even if it were, that means that half didn’t. We’re talking about a civil war, and a regional one at that, into which Russia decided to become the broker. Now if a segment of California’s populace decided to ask China to be annexed, would you be okay with that?

See the UN charted. The land should go according to the will of its people.

So if 51% of Californians (or any percentage, for that matter) voted to become part of China, you’d be okay with that? But at least the UN says it’s okay. /s

Sure, the US itself promotes this principle, see Kosovo.

So you would be fine with China invading California if 51% of Californians wanted to secede from the Union and become a Chinese province? BTW, the US has supported a lot of things over the years. We were against Kurdish independence after the Iraq war, and have never supported Kurdish independence from Turkey, Uyghur independence from China, Sikh independence from India, etc., so picking and choosing US foreign policy positions from the past in order to prove your case, is a poor argument.

But it is not the past. Kosovo is still not Serbia. And Serbs were ethnically cleansed with the help of the US military even though their only fault was to let the Albanian refugees after WWII in.
I guess 51% of Californians and the Chinese would easily deal with 49% in a similar fasion.

Maybe they could. And that’s the point. Would you be okay with that? You seem to be arguing in favor of a country entering the sovereign territory of a neighbor to support one side over another in a civil conflict. And, in the case of Russia and Ukraine, where does the rest of Ukraine play into that? Do they not have a say on whether a border region of their territory breaks away from the rest of the country? Would you just idly sit back and watch California become part of China or see New Mexico taken over by Mexico because “Oh well, many of the people in those states wanted to be part of those countries”? Bringing up Kosovo does nothing to answer that question.
