'A Failed Medical School': How Racial Preferences, Supposedly Outlawed in California, Have Persisted at UCLA
Free beacon ^ | 5/23/24 | Aaron Sibarium

Up to half of UCLA medical students now fail basic tests of medical competence. Whistleblowers say affirmative action, illegal in California since 1996, is to blame.

Long considered one of the best medical schools in the world, the University of California, Los Angeles's David Geffen School of Medicine receives as many as 14,000 applications a year. Of those, it accepted just 173 students in the 2023 admissions cycle, a record-low acceptance rate of 1.3 percent. The median matriculant took difficult science courses in college, earned a 3.8 GPA, and scored in the 88th percentile on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

Without those stellar stats, some doctors at the school say, students can struggle to keep pace with the demanding curriculum.

So when it came time for the admissions committee to consider one such student in November 2021—a black applicant with grades and test scores far below the UCLA average—some members of the committee felt that this particular candidate, based on the available evidence, was not the best fit for the top-tier medical school, according to two people present for the committee's meeting.

Their reservations were not well-received.

You'd probably have better health care results if you should consult the 90 yr old who lives in a cabin by the river.

"Did you not know African-American women are dying at a higher rate than everybody else?"

It would seem that admitting unqualified students to the medical school would contribute to the problem.

REALLY SCARY SHITE ... esp. a “diversity” anesthesiologist in the OR room for something like open heart surgery ...

And this crackpot Lucero got a 1.5 million dollar federal grant to do more of this stuff.

To be treated by one of these democrat DEI “doctors” is equivalent to being treated by a voodoo Shaman. No difference at all.

May as well go to a High Priestess of Gaia, and have her look at the entrails of a goat to determine how to treat your condition. /spit

Recently I had open heart surgery, aortic valve replacement and ascending aorta. This is serious surgery. My surgeon was from India. He taught cardiac surgery at the teaching hospital (Baylor Scott White). I selected him because he was the best they had. You put your life in their hands when this is done. He did well. I do not care what color my doctor is. I care about how good he is.

I once had a secretary (white, by the way) who was utterly incompetent (I had some black secretaries who were quite good).

For example, she often misplaced important medical reports and laboratory results, which was very dangerous. She was utterly unreliable. She could not understand my anger at her incompetence. To her, "All you need is a loving heart" (but not competence).

I had her transferred to some other place in the hospital where her incompetence was not so dangerous.

The entire UC System is breaking the anti-affirmative action decision that the SCOTUS made.

They use “first generation”, “economic hardship”, sob story essay scoring, regional preferences and plain old fraud to exclude any and every White male they think they can get away with.

White kids getting into the UC’s have to have a >4.2GPA and typically 6-8 AP courses behind them. You can be assured that the 35% “hispanic” students aren't anywhere close to that. But they get in with the aforementioned scams.

As for medical school, I know White females with a 3.9GPA in things like Biomedical Engineering and THEY can't get in.

The truth is that there are far too few med school slots in this country which is why foreign docs are now such a large cohort when they used to be almost unheard of. But the slots we do have are going to Protected Class people with average to good resumes in many cases, for “social justice”.

What they don’t discuss is that if these unqualified, ‘disadvantaged’ student make it into the world as doctors they are going to not only be unqualified but are going to carry an animus against White patients, especially older White males. Do you really want someone like that putting you to sleep before surgery?

“As a Chicana physician, she takes a special interest in diversity issues in medicine and disparities in the delivery of obstetric healthcare to women of color.”

Yeah. She looks plenty white to me.

UCLA med school has a DEI program called “Cultural North Star,” led by sap-happy Natalie J. Perry (above). Her official bio says her job is to “embed our aspirational Cultural North Star DEI values in our organizational DNA.” UCLA honored Perry last month for teaching students to “do what’s right,” saying her “empathy and radical listening” are to thank for her “success as an educator and a leader.”

A Daily Wire and City Jnal investigation found Perry’s academic career is based on outright fraud. <>Perry published a single paper, a 2014 Ph.D. dissertation at the U of Va <>about how colleges should create larger DEI programs. <>but the paper was ridden with the worst sort of plagiarism, <>she reproduced large swaths of text directly from several other authors, without citations. <>The scale of her plagiarism suggests that Perry lacks both ethics and competence <>and raises questions about academic programs that push DEI. <>Perry’s dissertation lifted passages from ten other papers. <>In key portions of her text, she copied almost every paragraph from other sources without attribution. <>She failed to even mention at least four of the ten plagiarized papers anywhere.

It’s the EXACT SAME with anything liberal - you can outlaw it all you want (race-based admissions, DEI, sexualizing kids, etc.), but as long as the people who do that crap remain in their positions, it’s futile - as they simply come up with ‘work-arounds’.

"a student in the operating room could not identify a major artery when asked, then berated the professor for putting her on the spot"

Medical students should be routinely put on the spot. They will be on the spot constantly when practicing medicine. They must be trained to act on the spot!

Indian medical schools are interesting - I don’t know how they can do what they do.

They have, essentially, open admissions. And anyone who doesn’t drop out graduates.

But their academic standards are very high, more British than the British, and class rank tells the tale.

Top students from their good schools are as good or better that their US counterparts. They are chiefs of service at top flight US teaching hospitals. Some of the best physicians and surgeons I have worked with (for 50 years this coming 7/1) are from Indian or Pakistani med schools.

So what about the not-so-good ones, the counterparts of Americans who don’t get into US schools or who don’t graduate?

In India, they’re MDs out running what amount to first aid stations in villages or helping arrange public sanitation.

It’s really different from how we do things, but their best are among the world’s best.

I spent many years being put on the spot by my superiors. It’s the only way I know how to train younglings.

But it is effectively forbidden now.

"UCLA still produces some very good graduates," one professor said. "But a third to a half of the medical school is incredibly unqualified."

The tyrant that is head of the application process, Lucero, who is admitting many sub-par candidates should be held financially responsible when the medical malpractice suits start rolling in.

Yep. My daughter’s friend - graduated salutatorian from a competitive high school, speaks fluent Spanish, graduated from Princeton with a pre-med degree and with scores of 95% on the MCAT - was rejected by every med school she applied for.

She decided to give it another go the following year and was accepted by ONE medical school. She was going to give up after year two.

We recently attended a special ceremony for outstanding med students at her university, chosen by professors and fellow students, apparently it’s very prestigious.

She is about to finish her final year before residency.

Hadda a friend who graduated from a big UC back in the day.

#1 in his class and all that.

Couldn’t get into a California med school - it was the beginning of the affirmative action era.

He was furious. He was an out of state student, but high enough on the pecking order that he should have gotten in. Instead, some over melanated moron from South Central LA did.

He got his revenge. Ended up as a Resident at Stanford. Now is a semi-retired consultant doc. But it is far, far worse for White males now: almost impossible. Unless of course you want to be governor of California. Then you just have to have the right family connections...like Auntie Nancy.

All the students in my medical school class were constantly on the spot, during rounds, in class, in conferences--everywhere. This is definitely important training.

When Martin Luther King was assassinated, back in 1968, everyone was in shock and seriously concerned, desperate to heal the nation's wounds. I was on the staff of a major US medical school. An emergency conference was called to decide whether to lower the school's admission standards to accommodate black students, as part of the desperately needed healing. The ultimate decision was that standards should not be lowered, that all applicants must rise to the highest standards. This was the right decision.

In the decadent phase of Western Civilization, all standards are lowered. Maybe this happens in the decadent phase of all civilizations. Maybe that's an inextricable part of the decay.
