Hypersonic weapons that can maneuver and evade defenses are not over-hyped.

Hypersonics are not very maneuverable, period. At that speed, they can't be. And to have the control surfaces big enough to be maneuverable, means lohs of drag and kills any chance of stealth.

But it's not maneuverability that's important, it's controlability and communication. If the hypersonic vehicle has no way to update where it's going (which is difficult) it's not very useful outside of hitting static points on the ground.
