He was also a San Diego Padre. His 1984 playoff home run against the Cubs was a thing of beauty.
I didn’t remember that. But I recall a Mike Royko column lamenting the fact that the Padres kept the Cubs from going to the World Series.
His “victory” party was a clown show. His beard of a wife showed up, along with pro hamas protesters and his supporters on stage looked like a bunch of female cryptkeepers in go go boots.
I remember it well. As San Diego Padre fans, we happened to be visiting my brother’s U of I residence house in Champaign IL, where we watched the Cubs-Padres playoff game with about 10 of his housemates. They were loud and obnoxiously happy as the Cubs were leading to about the seventh inning. Garvey’s HR subdued them with Goose Gossage’s save bringing utter silence.
