The door itself appears to be neatly removed with no other fuselage damage. It looks as though the door was not latched when it departed. This is a decommissioned emergency exit door door with a panel covering it inside the cabin to prevent it being used. It’s almost as if they forgot to latch it fully when they decommissioned it.
The side of the plane basically looks like it would look if someone opened the emergency exit.
Seat was empty.
Sounds familiar. I worked for a large company that purchased a smaller one. The smaller one was thought to be better run financially. Their "culture" was made dominant. As we used to say, they bought us with our dollars.
And by the way, the company ended up selling off 80% of it's manufacturing. It is a shell of itself.

Thanks for the link. Wow, just 4 bolts secure the outward opening door plug in place.
Large scale implementation of these moves is why the economies of the West are in the state they are in.

The guy installing the door panel must have thought it was a press fit....
Or it was near quitting time for that shift and they had just placed the panel in then left for the day and the next shift guy painted over the area....
