In early 2003, C-SPAN televised an American (moderate) Islamic conference. Every speaker repeated the phrase, “Islam is peace”. Near the end of the conference, an Islamic scholar arose to define the phrase.
He said that Islam was not a pacifist religion. He said that in Islam, peace is the result of Islamic justice. If there is no Islamic justice, there is no peace. There is where the phrase, “No justice, No peace” comes from. He said the United States wouldn’t see peace until there is (Islamic) justice.
In other words, the phrase, “Islam is peace” defines ‘peace’, not, ‘Islam’. Islamic peace relates to the social conditions resulting from Islamic justice. This differs from the type of peace where two enemies get along with each other. One of the goals of Islam is to put the world under the Sharia, which is Islamic law.
