And the player in question, Derek Cannuscio, is not even 'trans.' He identifies as male (or at least as a 'he'), and that is reflected on his Instagram channel as well. But Massachusetts law allows boys to play in girls' sports regardless of gender identity if there is not an equivalent male sport at the school.

That was\is the original loophole in Title IX.
It was originally meant to benefit the females.
In order to ensure compliance with Title IX, programs of both male and females must display no discrimination.
It had unintended consequences.
I remember early, a H.S. school in our state had a bowling program for girls and not for boys.
A team of boys joined the girls program and basically ran the table in the girls bowling tournaments.

Rather than build a girls program, H.S. and Colleges were dropping mens programs.
Some programs got eliminated for males and females.

Now the trans crappola added another element to unintended consequences.

This is what the women wanted with wishing to be considered equal in all areas. God created differences that most men and women respected until to many women wanted the equality and demanded it. Sometimes it’s better to want than to have. But now they have created a separate but equal status that makes both fail.

As I understand it, and I could be mistaken, Title IX requires that women’s/girls’ sports must receive the same amount of money as men’s/boys’. Football and men’s basketball teams have such big budgets/scholarships etc. that men’s minor sports had to be eliminated and women’s sports had to be created to achieve ‘equality’.

A friend of mine was a coach on the men’s wrestling squad at the local university. It was dropped so that several women’s sports teams could be created.

During the Obama administration it was argued that since women make up more than half of college undergrads, that the 50:50 split in money was unfair and should be changed to reflect women’s enrollment thus decreasing the amount of money available for men’s sports.

Not totally sure exactly what point you’re making, but I probably don’t disagree with you. In any case, I come from an era in which:
(1) No self-respecting boy would want to play on the girls’ team;
(2) No self-respecting boy would start talking about his penis to girls.
