A wierd cat but good highly descriptive writer
German Episcopalian family that dabbled in messianic kibbutzim
He’s accused of being a commie
But I’d place him between a New Dealer old school democrat and ardent socialist
Man we read a good bit of his stuff in the 60s
I bet kids today don’t
They read Angelou and Morrison
I like Steinbeck and Buck
Back when I read fiction
I found Joad pretty gloomy
yes, Travels was a tour de force.
the man was a genius with words applied to the human spirit.
Great post. Thanks SJackson.
*Grapes of Wrath is one of the books that one wishes he could read for the first time MORE THAN ONCE.*
Right up there with Exodus. Leon Uris.
I really appreciate that article, the writer Steinbeck, and the strength of those who fought to rebuild a nation on the soil of Israel.
I didn’t know that they have been allowing in immigrants of Islamic descent. I would say “what are they? stupid? I figured they would be more protective of themselves than the US is of its lands. They KNOW Muslims hate them, why not just a ban on their ability to settle, live or work within that nation?
Fascinating——
I spent 10 days in the Old City
With a camera and a Bible late 90’s.
Felt like home.
Ams Israel Chai !!!
Steinbeck was alright. I don’t know that I’d search out his books though.
I managed to get kicked out of high school Senior English because I flat refused to read some of the dreary depressing garbage that they inflicted on us. I think Henry James’ “The Bostonians” was the One Book Too Far. I was having none of it. I hated that thing with a mad passion.
They had already forced Camus’ “The Plague” on me before I rebelled. I loathed Camus and anything with the pretentious “existentialism” label attached to it. Nobody knows what the hell existentialism means anyway, it’s the original empty intellectual jargon word. People nod their heads knowingly when someone utters it, as if they actually know what it’s supposed to mean. Nobody does. The king has no clothes.
Wow, what a great compliment to a book that is. I am going to read it now, because of what you’ve said.
Thanks, and thanks for this story and thread!
You might need a long, warm day with no responsibilities to enjoy it the most.
Let us know how you like it. How can we tell whether our enjoyment comes from what is in the book versus what is inside of ourselves?
“You might need a long, warm day with no responsibilities to enjoy it the most.”
That sound pretty perfect!
From Salameh's Wikipedia page:
As a result of the failure in Lillehammer and his alleged CIA protection, Salameh felt relatively safe. Having lived under cover in various parts of the Middle East and Europe, in 1978 he married Georgina Rizk, a Lebanese celebrity who had been Miss Universe seven years earlier in 1971. The couple spent their honeymoon in Hawaii and then stayed at Disneyland in California.[4] When Rizk became pregnant, she returned to her flat in Beirut where Salameh also rented a separate apartment. Rizk was six months pregnant at the time of his death.[5][....]
Salameh served as the key bridge between the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1970 until his death after being recruited as a CIA asset by Robert Ames. The PLO, at the request of the US, had undertaken steps to help ensure the security of both the US Embassy—Salameh responded by posting a PLO guard unit there[8]—and, more generally, American citizens resident in Lebanon. The contacts later developed more extensively as the PLO offered its intelligence assistance in regard to larger regional issues.[9][1][10] The US had undertaken with Israel to avoid contacts with the PLO, but US security interests under Gerald Ford, on the advice of Henry Kissinger, enabled an unofficial relationship which, when discovered by Israel, deeply disturbed Israeli officials. When asked by the Israelis, US officials denied the relationship.[11] The desire to disrupt the channels between the US and the PLO was one of the motivations behind his assassination.[9]
Salameh received dozens of CIA alerts of the Mossad's intention to assassinate him. The CIA also provided him with encrypted communications equipment and considered sending him an armored car. He was also warned by the CIA that his practice of driving around Beirut in convoys of vehicles carrying bodyguards left him vulnerable to an Israeli assassination.[8]
Recruited by Robert Ames!! As disgusting as it gets.
See my post #32.
Sorry! Mixed up Robert Ames and Aldrich Ames.
Robert Ames eventually wound up killed by the terrorists in 1983.
Did not know any of that.
“And how are the hosts of them scattered in other lands to be brought here? Only by a miracle,” he wrote.
That’s a memorable quote.
