Oddly, Scott seems ignorant about how slavery operated and its ideology. As the Florida history standards hold, many slaves in fact developed skills and showed an energy for work that enabled them to earn favor and money. A lucky few were freed by their owners, usually as a reward for good service. This contradicted the ideology of slavery because it demonstrated that black slaves were capable of learning skills and supporting themselves in freedom. That being so, how could slavery be justified in either a moral or practical sense?

Consider the proposition that the critics of the Florida history standard tacitly hold to: that black slaves were incapable of acquiring useful skills that benefited them. Remarkably, that is essentially what many advocates of slavery claimed, that blacks held as slaves were an inferior and unequal type of human innately suited only to servitude, not freedom. Really, Senator, is that the side you want to be on?
