Here in my community in Louisiana, the local historians tell me that the dances could get dangerous. All the young bucks (white) would carry pistols in their jackets. Evidently it was culturally mandatory.
People did not travel as much back then, the available girls were a limited pool, and there could be a killing if someone approached the wrong girl.
Also, back then, a man could get away with murder if he caught another man with his wife.
Do I need to look?
Gee, sounds like a tasteful place. I'll bet every woman can trust the drinks they have handed to them. Such a surprise and shame something would happen there.

4242 Indiana avenue, just off of 42nd street. Anything west of Troost is the badlands. I was in high school about 10 blocks from there.
