Really smoky and smelly in Calgary today. I’m sitting in the airport waiting for a flight to Ottawa and both the smoke and the stink of burning permeates everything in here. It’s gross.

We’ve been getting the smoke in southern Wisconsin, but pretty clear today so far.

Very much obscured sky above Tri-Cities yesterday morning but not so much today. It will be back, though.

It’s always amazing how it ebbs and flows. The NOAA satellite videos are great for seeing that.

3,000 square miles. Sounds pretty big.

In perspective, this is about ONE FIFTH of the difference in area between Alberta and Texas. Texas is slightly larger by 13,000 square miles. (T=668,000, A=655,000)

While significant and somewhat worrisome, it’s not as dire as the press is trying to make it.

45 mph westerly gusts at the surface forecast here Monday. I hope we don’t get an Alberta imitation fire going.

It said almost 2 million acres, no idea what it is now. That’s a lot of land.

640 acres to the square mile. 2 million acres is 3125 square miles. The press likes to use huge numbers to instill fear among the populace.

We did get the natural cover fires I was worried about. One, lightning-caused, in the middle of the Hanford reservation. Another in a Kennewick park located in a in a big arroyo (homeless caused).

” The press likes to use huge numbers to instill fear among the populace.”

I agree with your statement in general. However, these fires weren’t even being reported here until a few days ago. They could have started reporting them when they reached a million acres if fear was the main purpose. Should they not report the size of a fire?

Looks like at least some arson is involved. It’s eerily reminiscent of the Muslim arson campaign against Greece a few years back.

Thanks for the update. I was going to post it this morning and forgot.
Yes, I’m sure there’s some arson involved.
