I believe that they are still planning a May 9th Victory Day parade in Moscow, but they have cancelled a particular event that had become popular with it - the March of the Immortal Brigade, where grass roots supporters could parade holding a picture of a relative who served in WWII.
Many people began to parade with the pictures of strangers they chose to sponsor for the event, like how some Americans in the past would wear a bracelet with the name of a POW/MIA Serviceman from the Vietnam War.
The March of the Immortal Brigade tribute to WWII Servicemembers became kind of huge (100’s of thousands) and I guess they just don’t want any groups spontaneously forming that large, for any reason, in case they were start chanting “Let’s Go Brandon!” or some such.
“I was born and raised in Europe in the late 70’s/ early 80’s, I think you would be surprised to see how mean your vaunted ‘economic growth and political freedom’ was on the ground.”
Then you undoubtedly noticed that many people living in East Germany and Central Europe voted with their feet, when possible and at great personal risk, to flee totalitarian regimes for the “mean” West. The subsequent fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the so-called GDR revealed in stark manner what an utter failure, economically and politically, the communist regime was.
It has always bothered me how Russia so quickly ignored and turned their back on all of our lend lease support, throughout the early years oyears of WW2 . Instead , they quickly turned into our mortal enemy , in Korea and thereafter. The OSS should have dealt with Stalin at Potsdam . What a different world it would be today.
Having a separate Victory Day was and is a deliberate insult to all the other Allies.
Russia ; so disloyal to any who have ever helped them.
Including the Ukrainians .
I sure hope I get to see Russia get its just deserves.
