The Marines are going to outsource over watch to the Navy Seals.
Both my son a Dyson-in-law were designated snipers/counter snipers in the platoon/unit and had mills in 2-3 wars/combat operations - Kosovo, Desert Storm. And Op. Iraqi Freedom.
Son-in-law (USMC - 4th MID, has the sniper scope of his best Iraqi opponent).
Son was his platoon M249 sniper for the 299th Army Engineers, MRB, and was bridge building support soldier before taking on the combat patrol and counter-snipers, with confirmed kills. 1000 yards accuracy.
Different role for some of our snipers in Name. Besides normal unit support, the best, along with their spotters, went deep into enemy territory to take out PAVN and VC senior commanders, and did with deadly effect. Some of their stories are found in “Vietnam Magazine”.
This new policy is just another step in the encapsulating of the Marine Corp by a bunch of Biden asskissing toadies who are afraid to stand up to those who are crippling, on purpose, our great military.
Time for past and present Marines to tell Congress, Biden, Obama and his anti-American hidden parallel government, to FO or face prosecution when Trump returns to clean out the Democrat cesspool now betraying our country.
MM,Vietnam/Cambodia journalist, Fall 1970.
In other news the new transgender platoon is shaping up just fine. Their new backpacks will have everything a transitioning guy to girl needs.
My son says that pack still weighs about 130 lbs in addition to the weapon system and other things they’re assigned to ruck last month at Palmfex in 29 Palms and up and down those tiny hills of West Virginia last week.
Equity Division Officers...
We just never learn.
USMC dumping all tanks, most artillery, most fixed wing CAS, most engineers, snipers… the infantry has female officers. And they are discussing letting techie types join without boot camp.
A tragedy for America.
Thanks for your post. Vietnam journalist? Wow....I’d like to pick your brain, I’m a aficionado of that war.
Gen Berger nailed the transformation the Marine Corps has to undergo if it plans to survive. He isn’t my favorite Commandant— but he got that right. USMC cannot stay a second army in the US military. It can’t do OEF/OIF operations and expect to survive budget cuts when the 34 trillion comes due.
So he placed all the eggs into the basket, returning to the original mission, with a twist: provide expeditionary forces for the Combatant Commanders, and organize itself to deal with the Chinese navy. In the latter capacity, I see the Marines performing the tasks similar to the Australian Coast Watchers in WWII (reconnaissance/intelligence), setting up chokepoints to deny Chinese naval access with anti-ship missiles, and to conduct raids on Chinese shipping in foreign ports.
I would not be surprised if the defense of Taiwan war plan has substantially changed to this end, because the Mission Essential Task List fundamentally changed.
Stupid-ass headline. Scout-sniper platoons have Not been eliminated.
From the article:
Instead of completely moving away from sniping, a new MOS “Reconnaissance Sniper” will be established “within the Reconnaissance Battalions.”
The new Scout Platoons will consist of 26 Marines, a first lieutenant, and an infantry gunnery sergeant, which will be larger than the traditional Scout Sniper Platoons that are comprised of 18 Marines.
A Scout Sniper is kind of like a tank; the best time to have one is when the other guy does not. The U.S. military always shoots its’ self in the foot between wars.
Agree some times one can do more damage than many taking out the leaders does great damage to moral confusion ensues.
Disgraceful
May the CMC be haunted forever by the visage of Major Jim Land looking at him through a 24 power Unertl scope.
Here is a description what the Marine Corps is working on— they are definitely leaning on scouting and anti-ship operations:
