The difference between relying on private financial institutions and the Federal government is that the Federal government can create money.
This means they don’t need to make a profit on their customers like a bank or stock broker would. They never have to close because of a “run” or from overleveraging loans and going insolvent.
Social Security is an entitlement. This is a promise and means that the government must pay people everything they are qualified to receive as long as the government exists. Only a sovereign currency issuer can make and keep a promise like this.

It is a two-tiered system. One tier for those who have worked and paid into it for 30, 40, 50 years.
The second tier for the freeloaders. never worked for a living, never paid a cent into the program.
Just last evening I had to explain this to three fifty-somethings, very intelligent and hardworking people, how SS really works.

Sorry, but that is absolutely untrue. If somebody, some demagoguing politician, told you that, they were simply lying. Social Security, from its inception, has never been set up to create "private savings accounts." The payroll/Social Security tax is just that, a tax. The money taken in goes into the Federal Treasury, just like all tax revenues go. Money has never been set aside into individual "accounts."
The so-called Social Security "trust fund" does not contain any money. It is an accounting ledger. It has never contained actual "money." It has never been "raided," by any President at any time. That's a myth that lying politicians have been knowingly throwing out there for decades.
If you believe otherwise, I'm sorry, but you're simply mistaken.
