Their ammunition capacity is generally limited to 5, 6 or 8 rounds but their advantage is simplicity of operation and reliability. Just squeeze the trigger and they go BANG 99.99% of the time. If the hammer falls on a dud cartridge (rare, but possible), you can simply pull the trigger again and the next round in the cylinder should fire.
I think a revolver is a more appropriate self defense weapon for someone who has limited experience with handguns. A loaded revolver is always ready to fire but is less likely to be accidentally fired when compared to some semi-autos. While a revolver has no safety to disengage before it can be fired, the long, somewhat heavy trigger pull requires a deliberate action in order to fire a shot.
Are those the most accurate for target shooting?
Competition target shooters almost always use semi-automatic pistols but a fine revolver can be just as accurate in the hands of an expert shooter.

No, semi-automatic specifically refers to a gun that is self-loading: when it’s fired, it ejects the empty cartridge casing and chambers a new round from its magazine. It fires only a single shot when the trigger is pressed.
BTW, a fully-automatic gun will fire repeatedly when the trigger is pressed and held back, until the magazine (or ammunition belt, in the case of an actual machine gun) becomes empty.
