Maybe there really are seniors who have told Rep Allen that they “want to work longer.” Can he supply a list of companies that will hire people in their 60s? People may want to work till they’re 70 or older , as he seems to claim, but you need a willing employer in order to work. My observation is that employers start finding excuses to lay off older workers, not hire more of them

Is the House GOP really going to push for raising the Social Security age, so seniors will be too old to get hired - but not old enough to collect Social Security?

This guys a lying sack of crap.

I am sure there are some minority of folks who do wish to keep working, but Social Security doesn’t prevent people from working longer, so its a non starter argument.

This guys a doofus...

Thank you for referencing that article 6thavenue. Please note that the following critique is directed at Rep. Rick Allen and not at you.

"Justifying Attack on Social Security, House Republican Claims People ‘Want to Work Longer’"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Rep. Allen seems to be clueless (blatantly ignores?) that Social Security (SS) is based on stolen state powers using FDR era politically correct interpretation of General Welfare Clause (1.8.1) as an excuse imo.

In fact, the congressional record shows that Rep. John Bingham, a constitutional lawmaker, had clarified that the delegates to the Constitutional Convention had left the care of the people to the states, not the federal government.

”Simply this, that the care of the property, the liberty, and the life of the citizen, under the solemn sanction of an oath imposed by your Constitution, is in the States and not in the federal government [emphases added]. I have sought to effect no change in that respect in the Constitution of the country.” —John Bingham, Congressional. Globe. 1866, page 1292 (see top half of third column)

Justice Louis Brandeis later reflected on Bingham's words when he introduced his "laboratories of democracy" metaphor to emphasize the unique, 10th Amendment power of the states to serve the needs of the people, ultimately depending on what the citizens of a given state want.

"[...] a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country." —Justice Louis Brandeis, Laboratories of Democracy.

The remedy for unconstitutional federal SS is to return what's left of “federal” SS funding back to the states so that each state can start its own SS program, again, depending on what healthcare and retirement state government services, as examples, that the citizens of a given state are willing to pay their state for.

The bottom line is that patriots need to tell their respective federal lawmakers that they're going to get primaried in 2024 if they haven't supported legislation requiring the corrupt feds to surrender SS funds back to the states.

If the GOP raises the retirement age they are dead. BAD IDEA. They need to stop this kind of wreckless talk.

I’m amazed how little time it took Republicans, once they got into power, to shoot themselves in the foot and make fools of themselves once again.

“Work longer”? (expletive hidden) There are few jobs for the elderly. They find out your age and don’t ever get back to you.

Accomodations are made for people who think they’re the other sex, and for people who are a minority religion, but not for the person who has reached the magic age of “retirement.”

Building contractor, age 71.

Needs to review his story on this.

Anyone who wants to work longer and is able and can get a job is welcome to do just that. They can also delay SSI as long as they want to.

Have at it.

Maybe the report is out of context or something but if not the guy is subpar.

I could be wrong, but I don't know anyone that can be forced to retire for age until possibly 72. I collected SS at 62 and worked as well as my wife is still working. I'm 71 and am not physically able to work anymore.

My saving grace was my 401k plan and my IRA. SS should be chump change for you to retire. If you rely on SS, you will never be able to retire. Don't even think about it. If you think $150k is real money in an IRA, you won't make it without working longer. SS is just extra spending money in Retirement.

Just like many here have posted, SS is not to be counted on in another 10 years or so. If you get a raise in SS it will be paid for with fake money from China. It won't even keep up with inflation.

If you are in your 30's-40's, budget for saving more money for your own retirement in an IRA, Roth IRA, or your 401k. If you plan to retire earlier than 62, have a Roth IRA with some money in it. If you are 50yo , living paycheck to paycheck, plan on working till you drop or selling Grandma's farm. You can save more money than you think if you don't think you have to have a $50k truck every couple of years or a vacation every year. I did fairly well as a blue collar telephone repairman with some overtime. Also learn how to trade stocks with calls and puts to draw 10%+ returns on your self directed IRA. Someone else is NOT going to love you as much as you love you. Anyone that tells you they can build your money for 10% will just lose your money until you take it back from them.

Another angle is to learn about real estate and have a couple of pieces paid for by the time you retire. Drawing rent is another plus, but just being able to sell property and put it in your self directed IRA is a must. If push comes to shove I can sell my own home to bolster my IRA to last until we are 100 yo. Realistically, my wife and I don't expect to make it much past 85. Only one relative has lived past 85 in our families. You can't plan for everything, but you can get a comfortable plan to last a reasonable time. SS will be a minor factor in financial planning if your doing it right.

THERE is NO MANDATORY retirement age.

A person can work as long as they wish/as long as they can find a job-—or make one for themselves.

Social Security is not the problem, it health care costs rising, it now 20% of GDP instead of about 5%. Medicare will have to be cut or we will see a collapse. Health Care costs now exceed 1/3 of the Federal Budget and continue to climb. No one in either political party wants to deal with this.

We HAVE to work longer - because of the Biden economy. No one WANTS to work longer.

Having a job sitting on your butt all day is doable, but people like me who do manual labor, would be a problem

I got forcibly laid off at 77. I would have worked for at least another year maybe two.

Republican Rep. Rick Allen of Georgia suggested last week that he would support raising the Social Security retirement age—a policy change that would slash benefits across the board—because people have approached him and said they “actually want to work longer.”
****************************************************************************

Well, Congressman, instead of giving (either intentionally like Lindsey Graham or STUPIDLY like other naïve Republicans) DemocRATS ammunition they can use in campaigns start THINKING! For those who want to delay applying for Social Security past age 70, how about proposing changing the law to allow their benefit to continue increasing past age 70 where the “delayed retirement credit” currently STOPS increasing with further delay in applying for Social Security.

And other posters are correct… many folks like their work and would like to continue working.

GOP should know by now that this is a good way to justify losing. LOL

Perhaps they could reduce welfare or deny illegals benefits. Stop refugee influx, quit sending billions to Ukraine, quit giving themselves large COLA raises. You know, stuff like that.
