>>German gas storage facilities have already exceeded the fill level target of 95 per cent for 1 November.<<
Kinda confusing. Is this huge gas volume all stored in pressure vessels? I can just see Putin eyeballing the rows upon rows of pressure vessels filled with gas. I thought that these huge gas volumes were stored subterraneously by water displacement of aquifers. The storage vessels make a great target for the Iran-supplied drones. It’ll have the same effect like blowing up the undersea gas line. Poof. All gone.
>>Basically full to the brim,<<
How do you fill a vessel to the brim with gas?
That’s an amazing feat. That should get them through the winter.
I sense an explosion coming...
“Is this huge gas volume all stored in pressure vessels?”
I believe they are generally natural underground caverns, adapted to this purpose, for the really big volumes. I definitely read of some like that in Germany, like the one they are building a new pipeline to, from their big LNG port at Willhelmshaven. That is like what we do with our Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the USA - use a naturally sealed up underground cavern, like a salt dome.
They likely have a variety of man-made storage vessels at different points in their system as well, like we have at Cushing in the USA for our oil. I have faith in Germany’s reputation for exacting engineering, to have a well designed system, and get a pretty accurate measure of things.
“The storage vessels make a great target for the Iran-supplied drones.”
We are talking about facilities in Germany, on NATO Territory. Attacking them would be a clear act of war, and clear cause to invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter.
Russia can ill afford to take on NATO now, while it is struggling with relatively tiny Ukraine, and has already exhausted the best half of their Military gear and folks on just that.
War with NATO would mean swift destruction of the remnants of their conventional Military. Swift.
Your right that large volumes of natural gas are stored under ground but off target that aquifer water displacement is involved. Zero interaction with under ground aquifers.
Huge volumes of natural gas, crude oil and other hydrocarbons are stored in naturally occurring underground salt domes. Nature’s impermeable storage tanks.
The salt dome is mined with fresh water to create a cavity in the salt dome. During mining, freshwater in and salt water out. During storage, salty brine water is displaced as the hydrocarbon is pumped into the cavity. Brine is pumped back in to force the hydrocarbon out.
You think Putin is afraid of attacking gas storage facilities in Germany now that we have strong leadership in the WH? /s
It is thought that Putin suffers from (terminal) pancreatic cancer. Do you think that strong, principled Biden will scare Putin from using tactical nukes, now that he finds himself at death’s door? I am surprised that Europe’s gas is stored in above-ground steel pressure vessels instead of underground caverns where it will be better protected. Was this Frau Merkel’s idea? Putin is still holding all the cards and the gas is still in the same situation as if it was flowing inside the submarine P/L. Veeeeery vulnerable.
