Normally when a hot war is won, the will of the victor is imposed upon the defeated. This was simply not the case in the Vietnam war. The North Vietnamese imposed their will on the South and eventually the U.S, when the latter recognised the Vietnamese regime in 1995. If Vietnam is thought as a win in military and diplomatic terms by some Freepers, I would hate to see what a loss would look like

That would be my definition as well.
The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 didn’t do that at all, contra Williams’ claim that “we won the war”.
In fact it left South Vietnam only in control of 80% of its own country, with a 200,000 man Communist field army still operating within South Vietnam’s borders.
Adm. US Grant Sharp, CINCPAC, titled his memoir on Vietnam “Strategy for Defeat” because his civilian bosses had no intention of waging a war to defeat North Vietnam. He had to deal with it firsthand and complained bitterly to them about their policy of “gradualization”.
HR McMaster’s “Dereliction of Duty” deals with the same material using the records of LBJ and McNamara and the DoD lawyers that they had designing what passed for strategy while ignoring the uniformed military. Johnson simply wanted not to have RSVN defeated on his watch, but he wasn’t willing to do what would take to defeat the North. When Nixon took office his goal was to extricate us from Vietnam, not to defeat the North, and we didn’t.
Had we won the Vietnam War and “the Peace” American GIs would have been freely walking the streets of a conquered Hanoi like we once had Berlin and Tokyo, instead of watching NVA armored columns roll into Saigon a mere two years later.
Good summation. If in the broader context, some view the war as a win against the dominoes falling in Asia, that at least could be argued as bearing some fruit. ie Thailand, the Phillipines, Indonesia not being communised. But the largest communist country of all was strengthened by the American loss of interest in winning against Vietnan, as Nixon turned to carrots and not sticks against communism in east Asia.

I think perhaps Williams was saying that as far as US combat action in Vietnam, we DID win. We were NEVER defeated militarily in Vietnam. The damn Democrats in Congress cut off the funding for the war, and THEY abandoned our ally, RVN.
But, I’ll let Williams explain himself if what I assumed he was saying was not accurate.

We won our part of it. But we abandoned our ally. So, in the full context of things, it cannot be said we won the overall conflict known as the Vietnam War.
