The sheriff is a county-wide elected office. Elected by Ft. Lauderdale urbanites to rip off small municipalities.
Certain areas are.
But more often than not they are larger, urban areas.

Yes, I can see why the sheriff’s office would not be enthusiastic about patrolling. One civil rights lawsuit for “excessive force” would wipe out the fees.

I’m curious to see what happens.
Several years ago, there was another place that lost their police. I’m thinking it was in Wyoming? Anyway, voters in that area wouldn’t approve the tax increases needed to keep the police department running, so the police department shut down. There were the usual doom and gloom predictions all over the media, and then . . . nothing. It disappeared from the headlines like every other topic and was replaced with the next outrage du jour.
About a year later, someone on another forum I frequented posted an update, as they happened to live near that town. According to him, the crooks in the area were delighted to know the cops were gone . . . at first. But with no police, there was no incentive for their intended victims to let the police handle things.
Yeah, turns out that having cops around actually protects criminals from their intended victims!
Within a very short time, any surviving crooks had either left town, or were sticking to the straight and narrow.
This is all from memory, so take it with a grain of salt. But, I would be very curious to see if the results in this town are the same as with the previous one.
For a population that small, your advice makes good sense.
Especially if you have a backhoe or hogs.
