I have a PhD in physics. The way I learned physics is by getting textbooks, reading the explanations and then diligently solving the problems, hours a day, every day of the week for months and years. It's how all of the really good physicists I know learned physics. It's not a rote-memory subject, like say leftist political philosophy or the history of minority oppression.
