Neil Bush was involved in the Savings and Loan crisis with an S & L in Colorado named Silverado. Neil left a paper trail, which Bushes usually don't do. Perhaps Poppy Bush didn't care because Neil wasn't being groomed for political office.

Reagan's first choice for V.P. was Gerald Ford. Ford turned it down, and Reagan was told to name Bush if he wanted the big donors to contribute to his campaign. Had Hinkley been successful, Bush would have served all but three months of Reagan's first term, and would have been eligible for a second term. Nancy Reagan didn't like the Bushes, and she had good reason to believe that Poppy Bush was undermining and embarrassing Reagan with the Iran-Contra affair.
