Collecting ice cores doesn’t really apply to sea ice ... the stuff heaves, shifts, overturns, and squashes itself around so much that it doesn’t really make sense.
Coring land ice is a different matter entirely. Yes, you get surface melting in the summer, but near as I am aware, even in a “warm” period there’s still freezing every winter so the annual cycle indicators are still preserved.
