I see. So he just attacked the whole damned country as part of a sophisticated ruse. He could have just grabbed the east lightning quick, and some of the inhabitants might well have greeted him as a liberator. But instead he went for Kiev and everything in between because he really just wanted Dumbass, and all that talk about how Ukraine wasn’t a real country, and a failed state, and they’re really just all Russians who need to be de-Nazified so they could start restoring the glorious empire of Katherine the Great, was just talk. Also all the oil and gas just offshore in the Northern Black Sea. Ukraine was exploring this with two Western oil companies (Shell?) when Putin invaded Crimea. Putin put an end to Ukrainian oil and gas.
