I have relatives in Ukraine as well. Perhaps we should have them talk?
You nailed it.
My wife can't even talk to her own relatives in Kaliningrad.
My family lives outside of Dneiperpetrovsk. They saw this conflict coming a long time ago with the Demonization of the Russian speaking half of Ukraine. Then the Obama inspired Revolution disenfranchised half the country. My Relatives are Russian speaking as well.
Yes the legislation making Ukrainian the only official language was stupid! It mainly affects official documents like birth certificates and passports. The first thing my wife did as part of getting US citizenship was to change the spelling of her name in English. Under Ukrainian rules, all names have to be recorded in the Ukrainian language. When passports are issued, the names are shown in Ukrainian and English transliteration in the Roman alphabet. The Ukrainian government applies their rules for transliteration.
Furthermore my wife had to return to Ukraine in 2017 to get her Ukrainian passport renewed before it expired. Continuing to maintain a valid passport is a requirement for being a Permanent Resident Alien of the US. It was cheaper and easier to send my wife home to Odessa rather than travel to Washington, DC and go to the consular section of the embassy. Anyway at the time she got her Ukrainian passport renewed, the Ukrainian government started issuing biometric passports. Under rules, Ukrainians with biometric passports would no longer require a visa to visit Schengen countries. This meant lots of Ukrainians were trying to renew passports at once. She wasn't even wanting to change her last name to her married name, because of the complexities of airline ticketing and the extra time it would take to get a name change on a passport. Anyway she had to get up early enough to be in line by about 5 am so she could be in line for an expedited passport to be issued on the same day. The Ukrainian government then changed the spelling of her maiden name on her new passport!
My wife has a friend who lives nearby in Texas, and she actually had to travel back to Odessa to get documents changed up, because the Ukrainian officials spelled her last name differently than her daughter's. This complicated having her daughter's application for Permanent Resident Alien status approved. After that, she had to reapply for Permanent Resident Alien status.
It’s the Russian speaking parts of Ukraine that have been the victims of Russian aggression more than the Ukrainian speaking areas. Putin is such a brilliant strategist.
Wouldn’t you agree that 8 years of being shelled and shot by the Ukrainian Army / Ukrainian Militias would cause the Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk Republics to seek Russian Aid? Not to mention being disenfranchised by a Revolution against your President?
