After looking at pics of some of those atrocities, maybe they should have been left in the dumpster.

LOL! So, not as good as hunters abstract crack induced works of “art”?

I was VP for Business Affairs at a college established in 1895 and was in charge of the physical plant. The electrical board for the campus a historic archive for electrical advances throughout the 20th century. When this one fuse blew we instituted a nationwide search to find a replacement. We eventually found it and I instructed the plant manager to get two. My subsequent request to redue the electric circuit board was not approved.

A close friend of ours has a son who was struggling to make it in life, doing odd jobs like landscaping and hauling debris. Not able to afford to rent, but living in mom's home. Fixed up mom's home, painting everything, then started doing oil paintings in his free time. Some guys who hired him for manual odd jobs saw his paintings, asked him what he wanted for them. He was thinking $800, but they offered him $5,000 each.

I thought the paintings were crap. But those paintings are now hanging in some local corporate buildings, and he continues to crank them out for thousands of dollars each.

Residential is just as bad.

Full disclosure. I'm a building contractor not an electrician. But, among too many other things I can't make myself through away, I have a supply of obsolete breakers I've salvaged from jobs.

A simple salvaged circuit breaker can save a lot of anguish and possibly thousands of dollars...As you know.

About 15 years ago, my brother hired a guy to do some renovations on one of his bathrooms. On day, he stopped showing up and left several thousands of dollars of tools at his house. I’ve offered to buy some but he’ll loan but not sell in case the guy ever shows back up to collect. He suspects they guy ended up in jail.

Once, my friend’s dad bought an old piece of farm and in the barn were a 65 Mustang, a Turnpike Cruiser and 3 Brass Era cars (a Pope Hartford was one) and a new (for 1980) Country Squire. My friend’s dad junked the Brass Era Cars and sold the others...

I thought ‘hunter’ at first, but then saw this individual actually did something useful unlike the aforementioned. Well, to be fair, hunter did manage to rake in a whole lot of cash. Wonder how that works...................

It doesn't happen for most people who dumpster-dive. A son-in-law of mine is always on the lookout for free stuff, and manages to score on vintage windows, wood flooring and the like to install in his old home. Daughter & son-in-law bought a historic building and need to keep the historic look. When crews are going to demolish a home, they allow him to strip out the contents he wants. Other times he is on the lookout for vintage toys and memorabilia (1930's to 1960's), which he displays, and vintage furniture. As for my wife & I, we want new stuff and she is adverse to using used furniture.

For most people, trying to make it on finding "treasures" doesn't bring in a lot of cash. Tried and true method is to get a paying job and saving money.
