There was a lot of resistance to it and the immigrants were fighting in New York to stay out of the army.

You’re absolutely right. The biggest disappointment in my life was being rejected from the service(s) because I had a surgically reconstructed right elbow that limited my right arm mobility. I tried to enter every branch, including the Coast Guard. Circa 1971-1973.
I could have done a multitude of things, the arm has not affected my life so I figured there was something….
To this day, when I see photos of military age men trying desperately to flee an area when they should be fighting for their country, I am appalled and if I were king, those losers would be conscripted and sent into action or forever banished to some hellhole in an environment completely foreign to the ones trying abscond.
