Just a thought on Eastern Europe and NATO; do you think it conceivable that some of the countries formerly under the Soviet thumb would form an alliance of their own, independent of NATO, having their own reasons for distrusting Russia and not wanting to be dependent on Western Europe’s comparative wishy-washiness? I’ve never heard it suggested.

Regarding this Ukraine thing the original reaction of the majority Russians was WTF, but then the Western leaders came out with condemnation, promising to throw them into a stone age, the online services and banking started to disappear and all the anger was redirected to the source of trouble.
Today about 80-85% support this thing due to this instant of miscommunication and I think the russian perception of the West is damaged for a couple generations to come.
The UK is nurturing such alliance with Poland as a senior sidekick. I think it is now dead in the water as Germany and France are mulling the EU army.
If it was me, I wouldn’t be wasting much men and resources defending the breakaway areas.
