Somebody with a computer (mine is in the repair shop) do a search of leaders/staff of the Natural Resources Defense Council in the 1980s and see if Damu Smith shows up.

If so, Smith, at that time, was a Communist Party USA supporter and friend of key covert Party organizer in the South, Jack O’Dell, a strongly suspected KGB agent.

I was walking behind them at an anti-defense major protest at the Washington Monument. O’Dell turned to Smith and smiled, saying, We’ve won. We’ve won”!

As I recall, this protest was about the MX train-carried missiles and the whole Nuclear Freeze campaign, which was a Soviet operation from the start. It may have been the Mobilization For Survival rally in 1983.

I can’t readily confirm Damu Smith working with the Natural Resources Defense Council in the 1980s, but he certainly was involved with the Nuclear FREEZE movement at that time and had gotten involved in environmentalist front groups by the 1990s. In 1999, Smith organized the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit (according to his obitutuary by Greenpeace, although there was a conference with the same name in 1991, tied to an environmentalist activist named Charles Lee, currently an advisor to the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice; possibly Greenpeace’s editor has the date wrong) and also in 1999, he cofounded the National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN). This group operated until 2006 (the year of Smith’s death), then disbanded, to relaunch in 2020, piggybacking on the George Floyd protests. While involved with NBEJN, Smith worked with Greenpeace on their Greenpeace Toxic Campaign.

Some details on Smith’s early career here:

His papers do indicate he was involved with environmentalism as early as 1991:

They aren’t duped... they travel to Moscow with their hands held out like they did with Saddam Hussein. It isn’t any secret that they have been hand in hand since at least the 1930s.
